2011년을 마감하며...

2011년...
이제 올해도 1주일도 남지 않았다.
오늘은 12월 26일, 이달이 31일까지 있으니, 오늘 빼고 정확히 5일 남았다.

올해도 여지없이, 책을 50권 읽는 것을 목표로 했으나, 여지없이 무너졌다. 40권+지금 읽는 것 1권...
다해봐야 41권이다.
그런데, 올해 한 가지 뜻하지 않은 것을 얻었으니, 그것은 바로...
내가 2006년 중반 책을 본격적으로 읽기 시작한 이후, 지금 읽고 있는 것까지 합하면, 모두 300권의 책을 읽게 되었다는 것이다.
정확히 300권.
연평균 약 54권을 읽은 셈이다.
이것으로 올해는 만족을 해야겠다.

올해 읽은 책 중에서, 개인적으로 추천하고 싶은 책들은 다음과 같다.

그들이 말하지 않는 23가지(장하준 저, 부키) : 거의 올해 초반에 읽어서 내용자체는 가물가물하지만, 현재 우리에게 불어닥치고 있는 신자유주의 물결이, 우리에게 어떤 영향을 미칠 수 있는지, 그리고 그 대응방안은 무엇인지를 냉철하게 분석한 책으로 기억한다.(대응방안은 없었나??? 여튼...) 얼마전 체결되었다는 미국과의 FTA가 가장 좋은 예가 아닌가 싶다. 신자유주의가 무엇이고, 그 폐해에 대해 알고 싶다면, 반드시 읽어야 할 책이 아닌가 싶다.

사마천, 인간의 길을 묻다(김영수 저, 왕의서재) : 좀 두꺼운 책인데, 사마천의 '사기'에 대해 거의 전반에 걸쳐 소개하는 책이다. 두껍긴 했지만, 재밌게 읽었던 기억이 난다. '사기'를 읽어보고자 욕심을 내 본 사람이라면, 충분히 안 질리게 읽을 수 있다.

내 영혼이 따뜻했던 날들(포레스트 카터 저, 아름드리미디어) : 좀 오래된 책이다. 출판연도가 1999년인가 그렇다. 인디언 혈통을 가진 저자의 자전적 소설(?)이다. 그런데, 인디언에 관한 이야기는 거의 안 나온다. 그런데도 뭔가 가슴에 뭉클~하는게 느껴진다. 참 따뜻한 책이었던 것으로 기억한다.

뜨거운 여행 체 게바라로 난 길(박세열, 손문상 공저, 텍스트) : 프레시안 기자와 만평가의 남미와 쿠바 여행기. 낭만적이고, 해당 지역을 소개하는 책이 아니다. 그야말로 좌충우돌 여행기이다. 소위 '좌파' 정권이 한 번씩 들어섰던 국가들을 여행한 여행기이다. '좌파' 정권이 들어섰던 국가에 살고 있는 국민들이 어떻게 살고 있는지, 관광객이 아닌 여행자의 눈으로 바라보고 쓴 책이다.

비그포르스, 복지국가와 잠정적 유토피아(홍기빈 저, 책세상) : 좀 어렵다고 느껴질 수 있는 책이다. 나도 상당히 어려웠다. 하지만, 외국책을 번역한게 아니라, 우리나라 저자가 스웨덴의 복지정책의 아버지라 불리는 '비그포르스'라는 한 정치인이 스웨덴을 어떻게 복지강국으로 만들수 있었는지, 그 여정과 한계점 등을 적은 책이다. 일반적인 정치철학책보다는 쉬운 편이다. 진정한 복지국가를 건설하기 위해서는 어떤 사회를 먼저 만들어야 하는지를 일깨워준 책이라고 할 수 있다. 복지정책과 정치간의 상관관계에 대해 알고 싶다면, 권하고 싶은 책이다.

이 외에도 '나의 문화유산답사기(유홍준 저/창비)', '윤휴과 침묵의 제국(이덕일 저/다산초당)', '희망(리영희 저/임헌영 편저/한길사)' 등도 추천하고 싶은 책들이다.

내년에도 나의 책 읽기는 계속 될 것이다.
이제는 소설에도 좀 눈길이 가긴 하는데, 아직은 그다지 마~악~ 읽고 싶다는 생각은 안든다.
내년에는 몇 권의 책을 읽을까??????

2011년 책읽기

이 숫자들은, 지난 2007년부터 읽은 책 권수이다.
2007년 70권, 2008년 63권, 2009년 52권, 2010년 47권...
점점 적어지고 있다. 읽는 책 권수가.

그래서, 올해는 좀 더 현실적인 독서계획을 세우고자 한다.
기본 50권에, 좀 더 힘을 낸다면 70권까지...

작년까지는 주로 사회/역사/인문/여행에세이류를 많이 읽었는데, 올해도 크게 다르지는 않을 것 같다.
다만, 여기서 여행에세이는 가급적 지양하려고 한다.
아주 안 읽지는 않겠지만, 사회와 역사분야에 좀 더 치중하고, 거기에 인문분야 역시, 사회와 역사만큼은 아니겠지만, 올해 보다는 좀 더 열심히 읽어야 할 것 같다.

다시 한 번 힘을 내 보자. 아자~아자~

부모님은혜

부생모육 그은혜는 하늘같이 높건마는.
청춘남녀 많은데도 효자효부 드물구나.
출가하는 딸아이는 시부모를 싫어하고.
결혼하는 아들네는 살림나기 바쁘도다.
제자식이 장난치면 싱글벙글 웃으면서.
부모님의 앓는소리 듣기싫어 외면하네.
시끄러운 아이소리 듣기좋아 즐기면서.
부모님의 말씀하면 잔소리라 관심없네.
자녀들의 대소변은 손으로도 주무르나.
부모님의 흘린침은 더럽다고 멀리하고.
과자봉지 들고와서 아이손에 쥐어주나.
부모위해 고기한근 사올줄은 모르도다.
개병들어 쓰러지면 가축병원 데려가도.
늙은부모 병이나면 노환이라 생각하네.
열자식을 키운부모 하나같이 키웠건만.
열자식은 한부모를 하나같이 싫어하네.
자식위해 쓰는돈은 한도없이 쓰건마는.
부모위해 쓰는돈은 한두푼도 아깝다네.
자식들을 데리고는 바깥외식 자주하나.
늙은부모 모시고는 외식한번 힘들구나.

별의 별 생각...

매주 월요일에는 새벽에 집에서 나온다.
지하철역으로 가는 마을버스 첫 차를 타기 위해.
지난 몇 개월간, 이렇게 매주 월요일에 새벽 첫 마을버스를 타고 다녔는데,
집 앞 정류소에서 몇 정류소를 더 가면, 약간 외진 곳에 정류소가 하나 있다.
이 정류소에서는 허리가 거의 90도가까이 앞으로 숙여진, 연로하신 할머니 한 분이 타신다.
그 이른 시간에...
어디 장사를 하러 가시는 것인지, 커다란 보따리를 버스에 먼저 올리고, 힘겹게 올라타시는데,
가끔 이 할머니 입심에 놀라곤한다.
할머니가 타면서 운전석 뒤 좌석을 보시는지, 그 자리에 사람이 안 비키고 앉아있으면, 쌍욕은 아닌데, 좀 머라고 하신다.
그리고, 그 자리에 앉아있던 아저씨/아줌마는 그냥 버스 뒤로 온다.(나는 항상 버스 맨 뒤에 앉아서 간다.)
새벽부터 그런 소리를 듣기에는 그다지 기분이 좋지는 않지만, 저 할머니도 집에 가면, 넉넉치 는 않겠지만, 손주(가 있는지도 모르겠다)들한테는 좋은 할머니이지 싶어 그냥 살짝 웃는다.

그런데, 오늘 아침에는 그 할머니가 그 정류소에서 안 타셨다.
갑자기 궁금해진다.
왜? 무슨 일이 있으신건가? 혹시...라고 생각해보지만, 그건 아닐거라고 다시 생각을 고친다.

흠...내가 왜 이런 생각을 하는걸까 싶다.

서울에 있는 ㅇ대 앞에는 어떤 할머니가 산발을 하고, 인도 중간에 떡~하니 앉아서는 지나가는 학생들을 툭툭치거나 다리, 팔을 갑자기 잡기도 한다.
몇 년을 봐왔는데, 따로 돌봐주는 사람은 없는 듯 하다.
그러면, 나 같이 매일 보던 사람들은 그냥 지나치지만, 잘 모르는 사람들은 지나가다가 할머니가 툭~치면 기겁을 한다.
나도 처음에는 그랬으니까.

그런데, 그 할머니는 날씨가 추워지면, 그 인도에 안나오신다.
날씨가 따뜻해지는 봄부터 가을까지만 그렇게 지나다니는 사람들을 괴롭(?)히고, 겨울에는 어디 다른데 가 계시는지 안 나오신다.
그런 상황을 잘 모르던 나는, 내내 그 인도에서 그렇게 앉아계시던 그 할머니가 어느날부터인가 보이지 않자, 그냥 그러려니 했는데, 며칠이 지나도 계속 안보여서 그 때도 혹시...라는 생각을 해 본 적이 있다.
물론 그 때는 추운 겨울이었다.

그리고, 봄이 오고, 그 할머니도 다시 나오셨다.
한 번 돈을 드리고 싶은데, 그 할머니가 어떻게 나오실지 몰라 여태껏 한 번 도와드리지 못했고, 이제 나는 그 ㅇ대 앞을 갈 시간이 없다.

다시 추워지고, 그 꼬부랑 할머니가 마을버스에 안타시니 별 생각이 다 난다.
그 ㅇ대 앞 할머니까지...

안타까운 사람들...

안타까운 사람들.
아니, 안타깝게 사는 사람들.
구렁텅이를 더 넓게, 더 깊게 파서 다른 사람들을 그 구렁텅이에 밀어넣기 바쁜 사람들.
모두들 자기 자식들을 위해 어쩔수 없다고 말하는 사람들.
다들 그렇게 하니, 나도 어쩔수 없다고 말하는 사람들.

하지만, 구렁텅이에 더 많은 사람들을 빠뜨리기 위해서는
구렁텅이를 지금보다 더 넓게, 더 깊게 파야 할 것이고,
그렇게 구렁텅이에 빠진 사람들이 놓고 간 것들을 챙겨서 먹고 사는 사람들.

자신들이 판, 그 넓어지고 깊어진 구렁텅이로 인해,
자신들과 그 자식들이 서 있을 수 있는 땅은 점점 줄어든다.

하지만, 자신들은 어떻게든 그 구렁텅이에 안빠지고 버틸수 있다고 한다.
자신들의 자식들을 위해서.

하지만, 결국, 자신들이 판 구렁텅이에는
자신들의 자식들이 빠지게 될 것이라는 것을 아는지, 모르는지,

아직도, 구렁텅이를 넓고 깊게 파기만 하고 있다.

구렁텅이를 더 넓고 깊게 팔수록
자식들이 그 구렁텅이에 빠질 확률이 높아짐을 모른채,
아니, 어쩌면 알고 있을지도...

꿀벌인 티비들만 자기들이 쓸 것보다 더 많은 꿀을 저장해두지.
그러니 곰한테도 뺏기고 너구리한테도 뺏기고, 우리 체로키한테도 뺏기지.
그 놈들은 언제나 자기가 필요한 것보다 더 많이 쌓아두고 싶어하는 사람들하고 똑같아.
뒤룩뒤룩 살찐 사람들 말이야.
그런 사람들은 그러고도 또 남의 걸 빼앗아오고 싶어하지.
그러니 전쟁이 일어나고...
그러고 나면 또 길고 긴 협상이 시작되지.
조금이라도 자기 몫을 더 늘리려고 말이다.
그들은 자기가 먼저 깃발을 꽂았기 때문에 그럴 권리가 있다고 하지.
그러니 사람들은 그 놈의 말과 깃발 때문에 서서히 죽어가는 셈이야.

당신은 나를 사랑하나요? 나는 당신을 사랑합니다.
‘I kin ye’는 이해한다는 뜻이다.
이해한다는 것과 사랑한다는 것은 같은 것이다.
이해할 수 없는 것은 사랑할 수 없고, 이해하지 못하는 사람을 사랑할 수는 없다.
원래 친척(kinfolks)이라는 말은 이해하는 사람, 이해를 함께하는 사람, 사랑하는 사람이란 뜻으로 쓰였다고 한다.

못보던 책이 거실 책꽂이에 꽂혀있길래, 아내에게 물어봤더니, 아내가 결혼 전 읽었던 책이란다. 마침 읽을 책도 바닥나고, 아직 책 주문을 하지 않은 상태에서, 인디언의 삶에 대해 약간의 호기심을 갖고 있던 나는 무슨 이야기일까 싶어 아내에게 책 내용을 묻지도 않은 채 덜컥 이 책을 읽기 시작했다.
1998년판 책.

이 책의 영문제목은 ‘The Education of Little Tree’이다.
‘Little Tree’, 즉 ‘작은 나무’는 저자의 어릴 적, 할머니 할아버지가 저자를 부르던 이름이다.
인디언들은 이름을 지을 때 어떤 사물이나 사건의 명칭 등을 따서 지었다고 한다.
애초에 이 책의 제목은 ‘할아버지와 나(Grandpa and Me)’였다고 한다.
부모님이 돌아가시고, 체로키 인디언의 혈통이었던 할아버지 할머니와 함께 산속에서 생활한 이야기를 엮은 것으로 자전적 소설이다.

인디언 혈통의 저자, 포레스트 카터.
어릴 적 이야기를 적은 것이라는데, 으례 인디언의 고난에 찬 삶이나 철학, 그리고 인디언 삶의 낭만 등을 적어 현대인들의 물질에 찌든 삶 등을 비판하는, 이러 저러한 교훈을 주려고 쓴 책이 아닌가 싶었다.

하지만, 이 책을 읽기 시작하면서 느낀 것은, 이 책에는 그런 교훈을 줄 만한 내용이 없었다는 것이다. 그냥 어릴 적 부모를 여읜 저자가 인디언인 조부모 밑에서 자라면서 느끼고 배운 것들을 적은 글이었다.
그냥 그 뿐이었다. 이 책을 다 읽기 전까지는...

책을 중간 쯤 읽고 난 후부터는 자꾸 이미 읽었던 부분을 다시 넘겨가면서 보는 나를 발견하게 되었다.
딱히 교훈을 줄만한 내용이 없는 것 같은데도, 앞에서 작은 나무의 할아버지 할머니가 하신 말씀, 행동 등이 눈에 밟혀 자꾸 되돌아 가면서 읽을 수 밖에 없었다.

그리고, 책을 다 읽고 난 후에 깨달았다.
이 책의 내용이 현대인들에게 어떤 교훈을 주는지는 솔직히 잘 모르겠다.
인디언들의 삶과 현대인들의 삶을 비교 분석하는 것도 아니고, 그렇다고 인디언의 삶이 더 나은 삶이다라는 주장도 없고, 그네들의 삶이 너무 처절하다고 울부짓는 내용도 없고(눈물의 여로 부분에서는 울뻔했다.), 그 누구를 원망하는 글도 없고, 더 나은 삶의 방향을 직접적으로 제시해 주지도 않기 때문이다.
어쩌면, 조부모와 작은 나무의 말 한 마디, 행동 하나 하나에 그 모든 것이 다 담겨있기에, 내가 깨닫지 못한 것일지도 모른다.

하지만, 나는 굳이 이 책에서 그 ‘교훈'이란 것을 일부러 찾고 싶지 않다.
이 책의 여운, 그 한 가지만 간직할 수 있다는 것으로 만족하고 싶다.
따뜻함, 따뜻함.

이 책을, 딸아이가 혼자서 글을 읽을 수 있고, 그 뜻을 충분히 이해할 수 있는 나이가 되었을 때, 말없이 건네주고 싶다. 아니, 그냥 딸아이가 볼 수 있는 곳에 그대로 꽂아두고 싶다. 언젠가 한 번 쯤은 읽어주기를 바라면서...

메마르고 메말라, 거북이 등처럼 쩍쩍 갈라질 흙조차 남아있지 않을 것 같던 내 마음에 이 책은 분명 따뜻하고 부드러운 이슬비 같은 존재였다. 이 책을 읽는 동안에는...

어떤 광역시로 월요일 아침에 출근한다.
그리고, 일주일을 어떤 광역시에서 일하고, 금요일 저녁에 경기도에 있는 집으로 간다.
물론, 이용하는 교통편은 대중교통이다. 지하철, KTX, 버스...
이렇게 근무하기를 벌써 5개월째.

월요일 아침에 어떤 광역시의 역에 내려서, 지하철을 타고, 몇 정거장 가서, 내려서,
그 이상한 3X1번 버스를 탄다.

버스가 정류장에 서고, 승객들이 타고, 다시 출발하기까지 과정을 간략하게 써 보겠다.

버스를 기다린다.
저 멀리서 버스가 온다.
내 앞에 버스가 선다.
버스 앞문이 열린다.
이미 타고 있는 승객이 많아, 앞문 안쪽에 있는 교통카드 리더기에 교통카드를 대기도 어렵다.
내 앞에는 타려고 안간힘을 쓰는 승객들이 한 사람씩 올라서고 있다.
이러다 버스를 못 타는 건 아닌가, 지각하는 건 아닌가 초조해한다.
나는 버스 뒷문쪽을 본다.
앞문쪽보다는 훨씬 여유롭다.
열려있는 뒷문으로 간다.
뒷문으로 버스에 오르고, 교통카드를 리더기에 댄다.
버스 기사가 한마디 한다. '거~ 뒷문으로 탄 사람 빨리 내리세요. 앞문으로 타세요. 앞문으로.'
나도 응대한다. '찍었는데요~'
이번에는 버스 기사가 마이크에 대고 방송을 한다. '뒷문으로 탄 사람 빨리 내리라니까요~'
나는 머쓱해하며 다시 앞문으로 간다.
여전히 내가 디디고 설 공간이 없다.
그래도 타야한다. 이미 찍었기 때문에.
나는 사람들을 비집고 올라선다.
다행히 내가 간신히 서 있을 공간은 있었다.
여전히 앞문쪽에는 아직 못 탄 사람이 몇 사람 있다.
버스에 못 탄 사람들은 안절부절한다.
그런데, 이상하다.
버스 기사가 두 손을 턱을 괴고 앉아있다.
뒤쪽으로 좀 들어가라는 방송을 안한다.
다음 버스가 금방오니 못 탄 사람들은 다음 버스를 이용하라는 말도 안한다.
타려면 타고 안탈려면 말라는 건지, 그저 앞 문 밖에 사람이 보이지 않을때까지 그러고 있다.
턱에 두 손을 괴고 있다.
몇 사람은 이 버스를 타기를 포기한 것인지, 다른 버스를 타고 갈 요량인지, 뭔가를 보고는
급히 뒤쪽으로 뛰어간다.
드디어 앞 문 밖에는 타려는 사람이 없다.
이제 문을 닫고 버스가 출발한다.

버스에 더 이상 승객이 탈 공간이 없다면, 다음 버스를 이용하라고 하고, 내릴 승객만 내리고 출발하면 된다. 물론, 이 경우 못 탄 승객은 화가 날 것이다. 하지만 어쩌겠는가? 어떻게 해 봐도 탈 공간이 없는데...

버스 뒷쪽에 공간이 있다면, 안내방송이나 육성으로 조금씩 들어가 달라고 하면 된다.
물론, 승객들이 순순히 안쪽으로 들어가지는 않는다. 하지만, 어쨋든 들어가달라고 하면,
몇 사람 정도는 들어가려고 노력을 하기 때문에, 최소한 몇 사람 정도는 더 탈 수 있을 것이다.

뒷쪽에 공간이 있음에도 조금씩 들어가달라고 몇 번 이야기를 해도 안된다면, 타려는 승객들을 뒷문으로 타게 해도 될 것이다.
물론, 뒷문으로 타면 안된다는 법적인 근거가 있는지는 잘 모르겠다.

그런데, 이 버스 기사는 어떤 노력도 하지 않는다.
타고 싶은 사람은 타고, 다른 교통편 이용할 사람은 다른 교통편 이용하고, 더 기다릴 사람은 더 기다리고...
하여튼 앞문쪽 앞에 타려는 사람이 더 이상 안 보일때까지 오로지 두 손을 턱에 괴고 앉아있다. 출발할 생각도 하지 않는다.

그러니, 정류장에 있는 버스 도착시간알림판에 나오는 도착시간보다 항상 10~20분씩은 늦게 온다. 그러면, 버스 기사는 왜 있지? 요즘 많이 나오는 자동운전시스템을 쓰면 될 것을.

중간 중간 사람의 판단이 필요할 때가 분명 있다. 그래서 사람이 운전을 하는 것이다.
그런 판단을 안 하려면, 집에서 잠이 더 잘 것이지, 왜 운전을 하고 있는지 모르겠다.

욕심을 내려놓기.

다들 어렵다고들한다.
욕심을 내려놓기가.

그래서, 나는 한 번 시도해 보았다.
욕심 내려놓기를.

그런데 한 번에 내려놓아지지 않았다.

마음속에서 욕심을 꺼낸다.
아직 욕심은 나의 손에 있다.

나의 손에 있던 욕심을 땅에 내려 놓는다.
이제 욕심은 땅과 나의 손에 동시에 닿아있다.

땅에 놓인 욕심에서 나의 손을 떼어낸다.
이제 욕심은 오롯이 땅하고만 닿아있다.
하지만, 아직 욕심은 나의 발 바로 앞에 있다.

땅에 놓인 욕심을 뒤로 하고 걸어간다.

비로소
나는 욕심을 내려놓았고,
나는 당당히 말할 수 있다.
나는 욕심을 버렸다.
나는 욕심을 내려놓았다.

나는 어디쯤 일까

곰곰히 생각해보니, 아직 내 욕심은 발 아래에 있다.
내 욕심은 그 만큼 나와 떨어져 있다.

하지만, 사람들은 내가 아직 욕심을 마음에 품고 있다고 말한다.
나는 말하고 싶다.
나를 보지말고, 나의 발 앞을 보라고.
나의 욕심은 이미 나의 발 앞에 있다고.
이제 뒤돌아서서 가는 것만 남았다고.

사람들은 나의 발 앞과 나의 마음속을 혼동하는 것일까
아니면, 내가 착각하고 있는 것일까
아직 꺼내놓지도 않은 욕심을 이미 발 아래에 두었다고.

나는 다른 사람들에게서 판단되고 싶지 않다.
나는 이미 욕심을 내려놓았고
그 욕심에서 손을 떼어냈다
그거면 된다.

하지만, 아직까지 사람들은 내가 욕심을 간직하고 있다고 말한다.
나는 그렇지 않다고 말하고 싶다.

나는 말할 수 없다.
아니, 말하지 않을 것이다.
하지만, 말하고 싶다.

HID키보드에서 shift+space로 한영전환하기...

일반 ps2 인터페이스 키보드의 경우, 윈도를 설치할 때 또는 설치 후, 하드웨어의 키보드에서, 키보드 종류를 3(?)으로 바꾸면, 웹브라우저든 텍스트편집기든 shift+space로 한영이 바로 전환되기 때문에 한영전환시 매우 편리하다.
그런데, HID장치로 잡히는 키보드, 즉 무선이나 USB인터페이스를 가진 키보드의 경우, 그 방법이 잘 나와있지 않다.
그래서, 인터넷 검색을 하다가 발견한 방법을 여기에 적는다.

1. 윈도우 레지스트리에서 다음 위치를 찾는다.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters]

2. 원래 값은 다음과 같을 것이다. 내가 지금 사용하고 있는 것은 마이크로소프트에서 나온 무선키보드이다.
LayerDriver KOR KBD103.DLL

3. 이 값을 다음과 같이 바꿔준다.
LayerDriver KOR KBD101C.DLL

4. 재부팅하면 끝~

* 주의 : 일단 KBD101C.DLL 이라는 장치파일이 있는지부터 검색해보기를 권한다. 만에 하나 이 파일이 없을 경우 어떤 일이 일어날지 장담할 수 없다.

복돼지의 수다 : 그래요...

나 : (복돼지를 감싸안으며) 으흐흐~ 복돼지야, 넌 이제 아무데도 못 가. 넌 이제 내꺼야~으흐흐
복돼지 : (장난스럽게) 안돼~ 안돼~ 놔 주세요~
나 : 안돼~ 복돼지 넌 이제 아무데도 못 가~ 으흐흐
복돼지 : (빠져나가려 발버둥을 치며) 엄마 도와조~ 도와주세요~ 아빠가 나를 잡아먹으려고 해요~
나 : 그래도 안돼~ 으흐흐(그러면서 살며시 놔준다)
복돼지 : (엄마곁으로 도망가며) 아빠~ 이제 복돼지 잡아먹지 마세요~ 알았지요?~
나 : (네 발로 걷는 시늉을 하며) 아~흥, 복돼지를 잡아먹겠다~ 아~흥~
복돼지 : 안돼요~ 안돼요~ 잡아먹지 마세요~

이게 지금까지 복돼지와 내가 거실에서 장난치는 상황 가운데 일부분이었다.
그런데, 오늘 똑같이 복돼지가 앉아있는 내 무릎에 안기면서 똑같은 장난을 걸어왔다.

나 : (복돼지를 감싸안으며) 으흐흐~ 이제 복돼지는 아무데도 못 가~ 복돼지는 이제 아빠꺼야~ 으흐흐~

으례 하는 장난이다 싶어서, 별다른 레파토리없이 그냥 하던대로 장난을 받아주었다.
그리고는 빠져나갈 수 있도록 복돼지를 감싸안았던 손을 살짝 풀어주었다.
그랬더니, 복돼지 하는 말이 가관이다.

복돼지 : (빠져나가려는 시늉도 안하고, 내 무릎에 그냥 발라당 누워버리며) 그래요~ 복돼지는 이제 아무데도 안가요~ 아빠 맘대로 하세요~

라고 하는 것이 아닌가!
띵~!!!!!!!
잠깐 곰곰히 생각하다가 다시 여기 저기를 간질면서 내가 장난을 거니까 그제서야 깔깔대며 내 품에서 빠져나갔다. '엄마~ 도와조'를 외치면서...

허~참~
이 녀석이 이제 별 말을 다하네~ 싶었다.
텔레비전을 너무 많이 봐서 그런가~

Stocks end at fresh 2-year highs

U.S. stocks wavered Friday but ended with slight gains, as investors digested a strong jobs report at the end of a week.
All three major indexes closed at fresh two-year highs and the Dow and S&P logged their biggest weekly gains in more than two months.
The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) added 9 points, or 0.1%, to end at 11,444, the highest close since Sept. 8, 2008.
The blue chip index jumped 2.9% during the week.
The S&P 500 (SPX) rose 5 points, or 0.4%, to 1,226, the highest level since Sept. 19, 2008.
The broad index increased 3.6% during the week.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq (COMP) added 2 points, or 0.1%, and finished the week up 2.9%, at 2,579, the highest since Jan. 3, 2008.
Shares of Starbucks jumped 3.8% after the coffee chain reported a fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $278.9 million, or 37 cents per share.
Kraft was among the Dow's biggest losers Friday, with shares slipping 2.2%, after it posted a third-quarter profit that fell 8% to $754 million and missed expectations.
European stocks ended mixed.
Britain's FTSE 100 gained 0.2% and the DAX in Germany rose 0.4%.
France's CAC 40 edged lower.
Asian markets ended the session higher.
The Shanghai Composite was up 1.4%, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong was up by 1.4%.
Japan's Nikkei also rose 2.9%.

Immigration Backlash Troubles Europe

From Sweden in the north to Italy in the south, far right politicians -- with anti immigration platforms -- have fared well in recent elections across Europe.
Many of them campaigned against what they call the "Islamization" of Europe.
As tensions rise across the continent, many analysts point to the economic crisis as the cause of the lurch to the right.
In September, when Sweden's far right Democrat party won seats in parliament for the first time, shockwaves were felt way beyond its borders.
A country often seen as a European social model appeared to be turning against its non Scandinavian immigrants.
The Democrat's leader was triumphant.
After the results came out, thousands of protesters marched against racism.
But despite this sentiment, far-right, anti-immigrant parties continue to progress across Europe.
Many, like the Freedom Party in the Netherlands have gained votes on an anti-Islam platform.
In France and in Italy, far right parties have also made gains in recent elections.
In July, France became one of the first European countries to ban the full Muslim veil.
Many analysts trace the anti-immigrant wave to the economic crisis.
Migrants are often blamed for undercutting wages, taking people's jobs or welfare payments from the state.
Despite the political climate, hundred of thousands of migrants still arrive on Europe's shores every year.
Many are finding they're not as welcome as they hoped.

Green Packaging Replaces Petroleum-Based Foam

Buying a product these days often means you are getting more than you bargained for.
Unwrapping your latest purchase can leave the room strewn with the cardboard, plastic and packing foam waste that kept product protected until it reached the safety of your home.
After being thrown away, petroleum-based packing foam can survive for thousands of years in landfills.
This wasteful practice may soon change, however, thanks to a new type of packing material that can be absorbed back into nature when its job is done.
Eben Bayer is the CEO and cofounder of Ecovative Design, which manufactures Ecocradle, a natural packing material.
"We source agricultural waste from around the world. So we have a regionalized or localized manufacturing process. If you're in the United States in the South you might use rice husks. In upstate New York where we're based we use things like buckwheat husks."
Bayer explains that agricultural waste products become the main body of the packing material, which is held together by mushroom roots.
"We wet and cook the seed husks and put them in a mold. And then over five days, indoors, in the dark, they self-assemble and grow into packaging parts."
This low-energy process will free Ecovative Design from the traditional large scale manufacturing operations required by most packing companies.
Instead, it hopes to locate its plants as close as possible to both its agricultural suppliers and its end-users.

서평, 어떻게 써야 할까? 그리고 독후감과의 차이점은?

책을 읽을 때마다, 한 가지 염두에 두는 것이 있다. '서평'이다.
책을 다 읽어갈 때 쯤이면, 이 '서평'을 항상 염두에 두게 된다. 그렇다고 읽은 책 전부에 대해 서평을 쓰지는 않는다.
그런데, 언젠가부터 이 '서평'에 대한 부담감이 조금씩 생기게 되었다.
'어떻게 써야 하나?'
'무슨 내용으로 써야 하나?'

다른 사람들이 써 놓은 서평을 보면,
어떤 이는 책의 각 장별로 낱낱이 요약을 하고 말미에 책에 대한 자신의 견해를 적는가 하면,
또 어떤 이는 책 내용에 대한 글은 없고, 자신의 견해나 느낌만을 적은 것도 있고,
또 어떤 이는 책 내용만 간략하게(또는 장황하게) 적는 이도 있었다.
또 자시의 견해라는 것도, 다분히 감상적인 글만 적은 것도 있고, 비평적인 글도 있고, 비판하기만 하는 글도 있었다.
물론, 밑도 끝도 없이 책을 폄하하는 내용을 적은 글도 보았다. 아주 가끔이지만.

보통, 인터넷 서점 등에서는 책을 읽고 난 소감을 적는 것을 '서평' 또는 '(북)리뷰'라고 한다.
여기서, 어떻게 서평을 쓸까 고민을 하다가 한 가지 의문점이 생기기 시작했다.
무엇을 '서평'이라 하고, 무엇을 '리뷰'라 하며, 또 무엇을 '독후감'이라고 할까?(개인적인 생각이지만, 아마도 'review 또는 book review'를 우리말로 '서평'이라고 하는게 아닌가 싶다.)
책을 읽고 난 후 쓰는 글의 형식에 따라 나뉘는 것일까? 내용에 따라 나뉘는 것일까?

스위도넛님(http://blog.naver.com/hwayli)의 블로그 내용에 따르면, '독후감'은 '책을 읽은 후 감상'으로, '서평'은 '책에 대한 객관적인 정보에 자신의 느낌과 평가를 덧붙이는 글'이라고 정의하고 있다. 특히, 책을 아직 읽지 않은 독자가 책을 고를 때 도움이 될만한 주관적인 평은 '서평'에 있어서 가장 중요하다고 강조하고 있다.('서평'의 정의와 왜 '서평'을 쓰는지 등 '서평'에 관해 읽어보면 도움이 될 만한 글이 많으니 참고하기 바란다.)

서평...
내가 읽은 책의 10%도 안되는 서평을 써 봤지만, 아직도 서평을 쓴다는 것이 익숙하지가 않다.
책을 읽을 때마다 어떻게든 서평을 쓰고말리라 다짐을 하지만, 다 읽고 나면 그냥 흐지부지 되고 만다.
다른 읽을 책을 찾느라, 아니면 서평을 쓰는게 익숙하지가 않아서...

인터넷에 찾아보니, 이 서평 자체에 대한 글이 그리 많지 않다.
아마도 정의 자체가 쉽지 않기 때문이 아닐까 싶다. 그 만큼 어떤 내용이나 형식에 얽매이지 않는 분야(?)이기도 하다는 의미가 아닐까?

서평이 정확하게 무엇인지, 어떻게 써야 되는 것인지 아직 감이 오지는 않지만, 그 자유로움(?)을 무기삼아 앞으로는 되도록 짧게라도 서평을 남겨보려 노력하려 한다.

* 인터넷 서점 등에 올려져 있는 서평들 중에서 보면, 두 세 화면은 그냥 넘어가는 꽤 긴 서평을 써 놓은 것도 많던데, 이런 형식은 지양하고 싶다. 우선은 나부터 이렇게 긴 서평은 눈에 잘 들어오지 않기 때문이다. 뭐랄까~ 서평을 읽는 것이 아니라 또 다른 책을 읽는 기분이랄까????

Chinese Counterfeiters Target Australian Wines

Australian wine producers say counterfeiters are threatening the country's multi-million dollar trade with China as exporters discover more fake Australian wines in China.
Australia sells around $127 million worth of wine in China a year.
Australian producers have hoped that China could become their biggest market within five years, as demand in the United States and Britain suffers because of economic problems.
With sales to China on the rise, however, counterfeiters are taking advantage.
Winemakers say there is growing evidence that imitations of popular Australian labels are found in Chinese shops and at trade fairs.
They fear that substandard copies threaten the image of Australian wine in China.
Australia is one of the largest wine producers in the world and its wines are sold in more than 120 countries.
Exports are vital to the Australian economy and wine is fifth on the list of farm exports behind beef, wheat, wool and dairy products.
Official figures show that the top five international growth markets for Australian wine were Denmark, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates and Japan, while China was ranked number one.
Over the past six years, wine sales to China, mostly of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, have risen by more than 80 percent a year.
But companies all over the world complain that their goods are illegally copied and sold in China.
Pirated goods in China range from movies to clothing to medicines and foods.

2010년 책읽기...

2010년 새해가 밝은 지도 벌써 20일(이 글을 처음 적은게 2010년 1월 중순경.)이 다 되어간다.

아직 올해 책읽기에 대한 명확한 계획이 서 있지 않아 오늘까지 딱 한 권 읽었다.

그것도 계획해서 읽은 것이 아니라, 도서관에서 지나가다가 그냥 가볍게 읽을 수 있는 책을 한 권 빌려서 읽었다.

올해는 아마도 그리 많은 책을 읽지는 못할 것 같다.

예전에 내가 사서 읽은 책들을 다시 읽거나, 가볍게 읽을 수 있는 몇 권의 책을 읽지 않을까 싶기도 하고, 또, 경제나 도시계획에 관한 책을 읽어볼까 싶기도 하다.

아직 정해지진 않았지만, 이렇게 계속 시간만 허비할 수는 없으니, 뭔가를 읽기는 읽어야 할 것 같다.

책 살 돈이 없어서, 더 이상 책을 사보지 못하고 있다.

학교 도서관에 있는 책들중에, 읽을만한 것들은 죄다 대출중+예약만땅이고, 이제 내가 읽을 수 있는 책이라고 해봐야 이전에 사서 읽었던 책들 밖에 없다. 요즘도 이미 읽었던 책들을 다시 읽고 있다.

읽었던 책을 다시 읽으면서, 예전에 느꼈던 감흥들이 다시 되살아나긴 하지만...

흑흑흑... 이럴수가.

올해도 60권을 채울려고 했는데, 끝내 여기서 좌절을 해야 하는건가?

책읽기 / 2010년을 마무리하며...

2010년 12월 28일 화요일.
이제 정확히 84시간후면 2010년이 저문다.
항상 새해가 되면 하는 다짐이지만, 올해도 100권을 목표로 했건만, 그 반에도 못 미치는 45권(읽는 중 1권, 구입 1권 제외) 밖에 못 읽었다.
한 달에 4권도 채 되지 않는다.

확실히, 요즘은 책을 읽는 속도가 더뎌졌다.
책을 읽다보면, 한 두 줄 뛰어넘어서 읽는때도 있고, 무슨 뜻인지 잘 몰라서 다시 페이지의 위 쪽이나 앞 페이지로 가서 다시 읽는 경우도 다반사다.
혹시 난독증인가?????

또 한 가지 이유를 들자면, 예전에는 버스나 지하철을 타면, 자리가 비어도 앉으려 하지 않았었다.
왜냐하면, 앉으면 자게 되고, 그러면 책을 못 읽으니까!
그런데, 요즘은 자리만 나면 앉게 된다.
이러면 안되는데, 안되는데 하면서도 자리가 나면 바로 앉게 되고, 그러고 나면 몇 페이지 읽지도 않고 존다.
집에서는 책에 손도 안대고...

이건 좀 더 현실적인 이유인데, 예전에는 책을 두 세권씩 구입하거나 대출해서 쌓아놓고 읽었었는데,
요즘은 그 만큼 읽을만하다고 생각되는 책이 눈에 잘 안띈다.
책 검색도 많이 하고, 서평도 많이 읽지만, 선뜻 사서/빌려서 읽고 싶다는 생각이 들지 않는다.
가끔 새롭거나 획기적인 시각을 가진 책을 보면 바로 읽기는 하는데, 그 외에는 모두 고만고만하다는 생각때문인 것 같다.

특히, 사회나 인문 분야의 책들은 더욱 고르기가 힘들어졌다.
예전에는 주로 사회비판적인 책들을 많이 읽었다. 어떤 사회적인 문제들이 있고, 그런 문제들의 발생 요인은 무엇이며, 해결 방안은 무엇인지 직접 내가 읽고 판단하고 싶어서 그런 책들을 많이 읽었다.
하지만, 그런 책들을 읽으면 읽을수록 나 자신이 점점 더 작아진다는 것만 느낄 뿐이었다.
내가 이 사회를 위해서 할 수 있는 것을 찾다보면, 한없이 작게 쪼그라든 나만 보일 뿐...
내가 이 사회를 고민하는 것이 어떤 의미가 있을까...항상 고민이다. 고민하는 것이...

하지만, 지금껏 4년이상 꾸준히 읽어온 책. 여기서 멈출 수는 없다.
내 블로그의 소제목도 '환갑때까지 책 천권 읽기'가 아니던가.
계속 가보자.
언젠가는 뭔가가 보이겠지.

다음은 올해 읽은 책들 중에서 다른 사람에게 추천해 주고싶은 책들과 간략한 설명이다.
짧은 식견이지만, 읽을 책들을 찾는 사람들에게 조금이나마 도움이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.

그대 청춘 / 김열규 / 비아북 / 꼭 '청춘'만을 위한 책은 아니다. 고민하고 방황하는 '청춘', 의기양양한 '청춘', 돌아보면 부끄러운 '청춘'을 그리워하는 중년들. 거의 모든 사람들을 위한 책이라고 할 수 있다. 선물하기 좋은 책이다.

헉! 아프리카 / 김영희 / 교보문고 / MBC PD인 김영희의 여행에세이다. 이 책의 저자는 'MBC PD'가 아니라, '김영희'라는 사람이다. 여행에세이를 자주 읽는 편이지만, 이 책만큼 여행지와 현지인들에 대해 꾸미지 않고, 있는 그대로 쓴 책은 본 적이 없는 것 같다. 다른 여행에세이와는 다른 읽는 재미를 느낄 수 있는 여행에세이다.

맹자, 진정한 보수주의자의 길 / 이혜경 / 그린비 / 제목 그대로, '진정한 보수주의자'의 참모습을 보고 싶다면, 강력하게 추천해주고 싶다. 이 책을 다 읽고 나면, 아마 우리나라에는 '보수주의자'가 없다는 것을 느낄 것이다. 전부 '양아치'들뿐...

팔레스타인에 물들다(안영민, 책으로여는세상) / 눈물의 땅 팔레스타인(김재명, 프로네시스) / 이 두 책은, 제목 그대로 팔레스타인에 관해 쓴 책이다. 전자는 사회단체에서 일하는 사람이, 후자는 기자가 쓴 책이다. 팔레스타인에서 벌어지는 일련의 일들의 역사적인 연원과 현재, 그리고 그 속에서 살아가는 팔레스타인인들의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 특히 후자는 왜 팔레스타인인들이 그런 고통을 받고 있는지를 국제관계의 과거와 현재를 통해서 아주 잘 설명해주고 있다.

한국 현대사의 길잡이 리영희 / 강준만 / 개마고원 / 고 리영희 선생의 사상과 삶을 제 삼자의 눈으로 이야기 하는 책이다. 고 리영희 선생이 어떤 분인지를 알고자한다면, 그 입문서로 적당한 책이다.

이 외에도, 개인적인 관점에서 추천해주고 싶은 책들이 많지만, 대부분 개인적인 성향의 문제라 섣불리 읽어보라, 마라, 할 수는 없을 것 같다. 물론, 위의 추천도서에도 개인적인 성향이 반영된 것이 있을지도 모르지만...

How to create a 'super password'

Say goodbye to your eight-letter passwords.
The 12-character era of online security is right upon us, according to a report published this week by the Georgia Institute of Technology.
The researchers used graphics cards to successfully crack eight-character passwords in less than two hours.
But when the researchers applied that same processing power to 12-character passwords, they found it would take 17,134 years to break them.
"The length of your password in some cases can dictate the vulnerability," said Joshua Davis, a research scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute.
It's hard to say what will happen in the future, but for now, 12-character passwords should be the standard, said Richard Boyd, a senior research scientist who also worked on the same project.
The researchers recommend 12-character passwords -- as opposed to those with 11 or, say, 13 characters -- because that number strikes a balance between "convenience and security."
They assumed a sophisticated hacker might be able to try 1 trillion password combinations per second.
In that scenario, it would take 180 years to crack an 11-character password, but there's a big jump when you add just one more character -- 17,134 years.

Nearly Half of Americans Use Alternative Medicine

In the United States, more and more patients are turning to alternative and complementary medicine as part of their health care.
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health say that nearly 40 percent of adults have used some type of therapy that isn't taught in medical schools.
But more than 40 U.S. universities, including Stanford, UCLA, Duke and The George Washington University have integrative medicine centers.
The Center for Integrative Medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center was founded in 1988 by Dr. John Pan, who had practiced as an gynecologist and obstetrician for more than 25 years.
He says the center has about 6,000 patient visits a year.
Most have tried conventional medicine.
"They have gone to Hopkins. They have gone to the Mayo Clinic," says Pan.
"They aren't solving their problem. They are telling them nothing can be done, you have to live with it and they are seeking the last resort."
With more Americans turning to alternative medicine, the U.S. government founded The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine as part of the National Institutes of Health(N.I.H).
Practices that are considered outside mainstream medicine, including the use of dietary supplements, meditation and yoga, as well as chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and massage.
A survey by the NIH in 2007 indicated four in 10 Americans use one of these practices, most often to treat pain.

Women find men in red more appealing?

Men wanting to catch the eye of women should dress in red, a new research shows.
Women in the United States, England, Germany and China found men pictured wearing red more attractive than in other colors.
Despite cultural differences related to the color, the findings of women being allure to men in red were consistent throughout the countries.
The research consisted of seven experiments, each with a group of between 20 and 57 people aged 19 to 22 years old.
Women participated in all of the experiments, while men were included as a control group in one.
Women also associated red with higher status as well.
The researchers suggested that for men wearing the color may trigger a change in behavior in women and that something as simple as wearing a red tie could give a more confident business presentation.

Job applicants who drink alcohol are perceived as less intelligent and less hireable by American bosses, a study shows.
In a series of experiments, researchers found that an association with alcohol caused observers to "expect cognitive impairment" in a job seeker.
In one of their experiments, the researchers asked 610 middle managers at U.S. companies to evaluate a video recording of a dramatized interview over dinner between a pair of actors playing a manager and a prospective hire.
In a mock interviews, the manager ordered "Coke" or "the house Merlot."
The job applicant also ordered either the soft drink or the wine.
Regardless of what the manager ordered, job seekers were seen as less worthy of being hired and less "intelligent and intellectual" when they ordered the Merlot.

이 책은 제목 그대로, 지구상에서 아주 질 나쁜(?) 몇 나라에 대해 이야기 하는 책이다.
물론, '나쁘다'의 기준은 깡패국가인 미국과 그 친한 친구 국가들의 기준이다.
중남미 3개국가, 아프리카와 중동 각각 1개국가, 아시아 2개국가이다.
물론, 이 지구상에서 깡패국가 미국에게 대들고 싶고, 또 지금 대들고 있는 국가가 이들 7개국가뿐이겠냐마는, 아마도 그 대드는 양상이 가장 현저한 국가들, 그리고 그들로부터 가장 피해를 많이 입은 국가들이 아닌가 싶다.
이들 국가들에 호기심이 가는 이유는, 단순히 기분나쁘다고 대드는 수준이 아니라, 나름대로의 철학과 식견을 가지고, 미국을 뛰어넘으려는 노력을 하고 있고, 또 일정부분 그 성과가 나타나고 있기 때문이다.
또한, 쉽지는 않겠지만, 미국으로부터 많은 피해(물적, 심적)를 입고 있지만 아직 표면적으로 드러내지 못하고 있는 많은 약소국가들의 극미(克美)의 전범이 되어 줄 수 있는 아주 귀중한 자산이라고도 생각이 들기 때문이다.

이 책에서 한 꼭지씩 맡은 저자들이 말하는 것의 공통점은 '반미'라고 한다.
'미국을 반대한다'라는 뜻일텐데, '반미'도 좋지만, 그 보다 더 근본적이고 체계적인 '반미'를 원한다면, '지미(知美)'가 더 우선되어야 하는 것은 아닐까?
3년가까이 박물관에서, 초등학생 대상 과학관련 강의를 하면서 가끔 콜롬부스의 신대륙 발견에 대해 잠깐 이야기 할 때가 있었다.
다들 아는 상식이 되어버린, "콜롬부스가 '신'대륙을 발견했다"는 이야기를 하고 말미에는,
'하지만, 콜롬부스가 신대륙을 발견하기 전에 거기에는 이미 누군가 살고 있었죠?'
라는 이야기를 했었다.
아직 어린아이들이라 더 이상의 이야기는 하지 않았지만, 내 이야기가 끝나면, 일단의 아이들은,
'맞아요. 인디언들이 먼저 살고 있었어요.'
라는 말로 맞장구(?)를 쳐주기도 하고, 그 다음에는 정말 소수의 아이들이지만,
'맞아요. 콜롬부스가 인디언들을 다 죽이고 차지한거예요.'
라고 말하는 아이들도 있었다.
내 가 그 나이때는 TV에서 서부영화만 나오면, 무섭게 생긴 나쁜(?) 인디언들보다는, 키크고 멋진 서부 총잡이 아저씨들이 이기기를 바랐었고, 머리가 굵어지고 난 뒤에야 콜롬부스의 신대륙 발견이 어떤 것인지를 어렴풋이 알 수 있었다.

요즘 아이들이 서부영화를 보게되면 인디언과 서부 총잡이들을 어떻게 생각할지는 잘 모른다.
하지만, 콜롬부스가 도착한 땅이 신대륙, 즉 아무도 살지 않았고 콜롬부스가 그 땅에 발을 디딘 최초의 인간은 아니라는 사실을, 소수이긴 하겠지만, 이제 초등학생들까지도 어느 정도 인지를 하고 있음을 느낄 수 있었다.

이것은 '반미'가 아니라 '지미(知美)'다.
즉, 미국이라는 나라를 제대로 알고, 또 제대로 알리자는 것이다.
'반미'를 할 것이냐, '친미'를 할 것이냐는, 제대로 알고 난 뒤 개개인이 결정할 몫이다.
물론, 아직도 '반미'를 '좌빨'로 몰아가는 구시대적인 사회인식이 개선되어야하는 것도 중요하지만, '친'과 '반' 이분법적인 사고방식보다는, 지금껏 듣지 못했고 보지 못했던 사실들을 알려주는 것도 그에 못지않게 중요할 것이다.

Less Clothing can Reduce Stress

What am I going to wear today?
That daily question often consumes time and causes stress.
Some people might stand before a stuffed closet and still think, 'There's nothing to wear.'
But, what if they had only six items of clothing to choose from and wear for an entire month?
That's the idea behind Six Items or Less, a self-imposed exercise in frugality, a gentle protest against fashion consumerism and the high cost of apparel.
New York City advertising executive Heidi Hackemer came up with the idea.
"I was talking with friend of the internet about how much time and energy we spend on clothes."
"She and I wanted to see if we can get our wardrobe down to a uniform and see what type of effect that would have on our lives."
The two friends shared their idea with other friends.
"We sent out a few tweets and all of a sudden, within five days, we had almost 100 people from around the world saying that they too wanted to take part in this experiment with us for a month"
It proved to be an interesting month for a wide variety of people.
Hackemer was surprised at how few people seemed to notice that she was wearing the same six items the whole month.
She says, "Having fewer choices reduced stress in her life."
"I learned what's really important and what's really worth stressing over. I also found that physical stuff that we allow into our world, really jams up our mind. And our mind can be quite a powerful and positive thing if we cleared up a little bit."

A campaign for blue planet protection

The oceans have become so depleted by over-fishing, pollution and climate change that they can only be saved by a large global network of reserves, according to a growing consensus among marine scientists.
Campaigners say that sea life -- particularly at the top of the food chain -- is suffering to such an extent that there will eventually be no fish left unless drastic action is not taken to protect the oceans.
More than 70 percent of the world is covered by oceans.
Currently there are more than 4,000 marine protected areas covering just over 1 percent of the oceans, but the vast majority of reserves have only limited protection.
According to Professor Callum Roberts, of the University of York, one of the leading campaigners, only about 0.1 percent of the sea is completely protected from all exploitation.
He said that this should be between 25 and 45 percent to give marine species the best chance of recovery.
He added "There's strong and ample evidence that the oceans' eco systems are in trouble and need protection."
"Fishing now reaches every corner of the world's oceans, so the only refuges are those we have chosen to create."
"In the future climate change is going to loom ever more heavily as a factor in damaging marine life. The only way the oceans can remain resilient to climate change is by establishing more protection."

중앙아시아와 동북아시아의 민족에 대해 관심은 많았지만,
현대사회에서는 그리 이목을 끌만한 이슈가 없다보니 그에 따라 그들을 이야기하는 책도 거의 없는 실정이다.
중앙 및 동북아시아에서 살았던 민족에 대한 책이 전혀 없는 것은 아니지만, 대부분 전문연구자들을 위한 서적들이어서 그런지, 역사를 전공하지 않고 역사에 관심이 있는 나같은 사람에게는 상당히 어려운 책들뿐이었다.
그 중에 티베트의 경우에는, 달라이 라마라는 세계적으로 유명한 지도자가 있고, 티베트 민족들의 독립에 대한 열망이 다른 억압받는 민족들보다 더 크기 때문에, 그리고 거기에 더해 티베트에 대해 약간의 신비감을 갖고 있는 많은 사람들에 의해, 정치적이든 비정치적이든, 티베트에 관한 책들이 꾸준히 나오고 있긴 하지만, 그 외 (중국인들이 말하는) 신강 위구르 자치구나 내몽공 자치구에 사는 사람들 또는 민족에 관한 책은 거의 없는 것이 현재 실정이다.

내가 이런 중국내 소수민족에 관심을 갖게 된 이유도, 티베트 때문이었다.
처음에는 나 역시도 그 신비감에, 약간의 호기심으로 그들의 이야기를 읽다보니, 자연적으로 그들의 역사를 조금이나마 알게 되었고, 그들이 현재 어떤 상태에서 살아가고 있는지를 알 수 있게 되었다.

하지만, 역사(또는 그와 관련된) 비전공자로서 티베트 이외의 소수민족에 관한 이야기를 쓴 책은 거의 볼 수가 없었고, 있다하더라도 내게는 너무 어려운 전문서적 수준이라 읽을 엄두도 내지 못했었다.

하지만, 이 책은 중앙아시아의 역사를 전공하는 전문가가 쓴 글이지만, 기행문 형식을 빌려 일반인들이 보다 알기 쉽게 중앙아시아에 퍼져 있는 소수민족들의 역사에 대해 쓴 책이라, 중앙아시아의 소수민족들의 역사를 알고자하는 (역사 비전공)독자들에게는, 그 시작으로 안성마춤인 책이라고 생각된다.

티베트에 관한 책을 읽으면서 느낀 것이지만, 현재를 포함한 인류의 역사는 절대 약자의 편이 아니라는 것이다. 이러한 느낌은 이 책을 읽음으로 해서 더 확고하게 다가왔다.
특히나, 중국이라는 거대한 국가를 이웃으로 두고 있는 대한민국 역시 저들 중국내 소수민족의 처지가 되지 말라는 법이 없다는 것을 생각하면 소름이 끼칠 정도다.
한족 역시 지난 2천년동안의 역사에서, 다른 민족들에게 지배를 당하기도 했고, 핍박도 당했으며, 오늘날과 같은 국경선을 확정한 것 역시 그리 오래되지 않았지만, 중국이 현재 동북아시아에서 가장 강력한 힘을 가지고 있고, 강력한 영향력을 행상할 수 있는 국가라는데는 이견이 없을 것이다.

중국내 소수민족들의 현실은, 약육강식이 진실이 되어 있는 현재, 아니 인류의 역사에서, 어떻게해야 살아남을 수 있는지를 보여주는 교과서라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

Food pipe cancer 'doubles in men'

Cancers of the food pipe in Britain have doubled in men over the past 25 years, figures from Cancer Research UK show.
However, over the same period - 1983 to 2007 - cases in women only increased by 8%.
Researchers said the gender contrast in esophageal cancer rates could be largely explained by the way men put on weight as "beer bellies".
Men are also likely to have poorer diets than women, eating more fatty foods and lower amounts of fruit and vegetables.
Esophageal cancer is the ninth most common cancer in the UK.
It is one of the most difficult cancers to detect and treat, with only 8% surviving for five years or more.
The risk of developing the cancer increases with age.
Back in 1983, about 2,600 men were diagnosed with esophageal cancer, 9.6 in every 100,000 men.
Latest figures show 5,100 men, 14.4 in every 100,000, were diagnosed with the cancer in 2007.
The number of cases in women increased from 5.1 to 5.5 per 100,000 people.
The most dramatic rise was among men in their 50s, where the rates rose by 67% over the 25-year period.
Professor Janusz Jankowski, an esophageal cancer expert at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, said: "One basic issue is that men's diets are worse than women's."
"They tend to eat more fatty foods and less fruit and vegetable. Both of those things increase reflux disease, where acid comes up from the stomach."
But Professor Jankowski said obesity may also be a big reason behind the increase.

Ancient Shipwrecks Found Off Italy's Coast

A team of marine archeologists has discovered new underwater treasures in the Italian seas.
Trading vessels dating from the first century BC through 7th century AD were found in the waters off the Pontine Islands.
Italian culture authorities and the Aurora Trust, a U.S. foundation which promotes underwater exploration in the Mediterranean, discovered four shipwrecks resting on the seabed.
After the discovery, the team used sonar scanners for the exploration and filmed the targets lying on the seabed.
The remains of the ships, up to 18 meters long, were found and documented at a depth of between 100-150 meters.
Annalisa Zarattini, an underwater archaeologist with Italy's culture ministry, says the deeper a wreck is found, the higher the chance that it is better preserved.
The ships were in good condition after so many centuries because they have not been disturbed by fishermen or illegal archaeology hunters.
Discribing her latest find, Zarattini said "We identified four Roman wrecks, four ships that probably sunk during a storm at different time periods."
In Roman times, the Pontine islands belonged to Emperor Augustus.
The ships cargoes were found completely intact.
The vessels carried goods from North Africa and Spain.
They included wine, olive oil, fruit and garum, a pungent fish sauce used in Roman cooking.
One of the concerns archaeologists have is that these treasures may be illegally lifted from where they have been found.

Sounds like a Prius down the street

Toyota will begin selling a noise-making device for its Prius hybrids in Japan that is designed to alert pedestrians when the quiet, gasoline-electric vehicle is approaching.
The device, which emits a humming sound similar to an electric motor, will be available on the third-generation Prius sold in Japan.
It is aim to "alert but not annoy," according to a Toyota press release.
A Toyota spokesman said the company plans to begin offering the device in other markets, including the United States, at some point in the future.
But he could not say when.
The device meets new safety requirements in Japan for gasoline-electric and other hybrid vehicles that are much quieter than traditional gas powered cars.
The ¥12,600 device automatically kicks in when the Prius is running on its electric motor at speeds up to about 15 miles per hour.

Washington DC Tourism Rebounds Despite Economic Downturn

Tourism officials in Washington D.C. say the U.S. economic downturn has been forcing many Americans to scale back and even cancel their traditional vacation plans.

International travelers are behind the surge in number of tourists visiting Washington, offsetting a drop in the number of American tourists visiting the city.

How English is Becoming 'Globish'

From immigrants in the United States to activists in Thailand and Iran, more and more people are choosing English to communicate, protest and do business with the rest of the world.
But as the language spreads, it is dramatically changing as well; so much so that one British author believes the evolving speech deserves a new name - "Globish."
Robert McCrum says this new form of simplified English is breaking away from its American and British roots as speakers from places like China and India transform the language.
McCrum, the author of Globish: How the English Language Became the World's Language, credits a French scholar named Jean-Paul Nerrière, for creating the term Globish.
He defined Globish as a simplified form of English using only a 1,500 word vocabulary and basic grammar.
"Globish is the language that two non-English speakers would use.", McCrum explained.
"Let's say a Korean meeting a Brazilian or a Russian, in France or Germany. It is the non-native version of the English language."

Global Road Safety Campaign Launched

The U.N. Economic Commission for Europe and the International Basketball Federation are launching a global road safety campaign to reduce traffic crashes.
UNECE Executive Secretary Jan Kubis says traffic accidents are a major problem, that is growing in all regions around the world.
"Every year, about 1.3 million people die as a result of road accidents," said Kubis.
"It means some 3,500 deaths a day."
The U.N. reports traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young people aged between five and 29.
In addition, it finds between 20 to 50million people are injured every year.
Many become severely disabled.
The World Bank estimates road accidents cost four percent of GDP worldwide.
UNECE Director of the Transport Division, Eva Molnar, says that more than half of the casualties resulting from road accidents are pedestrians, cyclists or other road users not traveling in a car.
"In Africa, pedestrians, particularly women who take their merchandise to the market every day and who are destined to walk several hours a day-three, four hours to the market-three, four hours back from the market home, are the most vulnerable road users," said Molnar.
The Secretary-General of the International Basketball Federation, Patrick Baumann, says that many promising or established basketball players have lost their lives in road accidents.
He causes a needless, shocking and tragic loss of life, which needs to be tackled urgently.

Singapore Math for US Teachers

One group of elementary school math teachers in the U.S. recently gathered in Baker, Louisiana to learn more about Singapore Math, a curriculum they have begun to teach.
It is a curriculum modeled on the way math is taught in Singapore.
"It helped Singapore math students skyrocket to number one by the 1990s and that's where they've stayed ever since," says Scott Baldridge, an expert on this approach.
He has designed a training program for elementary school math teachers who want to use it.
Baldridge says Singapore used to import all of its mathematics textbooks from other nations.
But in 1980, Singaporian teachers started to develop their own math curriculum.
Baldridge explains that they prioritized the concepts they wanted their students to learn.
"They don't try to tackle 50 topics in a year," he says.
"They just try to tackle 14 topics, and do those 14 topics really well."
Each of those topics - from adding and subtracting to fractions and decimals - is approached in three different stages.
"In the first stage, measurements are involved. Kids go around measuring doorways or windows or they count actual cash." says Baldridge.
"The second stage is pictorial. Teachers convert the cash into pictures of coins. In the final stage, they use the pictorial representations to explain the mathematics, for example, to add 313 plus 516. They have a step-by-step procedure they follow."

US States Target Black Market Cigarette Sales

Lawmakers across the U.S. have raised taxes on cigarettes to provide local governments with much needed funds.
But a thriving black market in cigarettes is costing governments billions of dollars a year in lost tax revenue.
That's prompted agencies at all levels to join an effort to fight cigarette trafficking.
The price of a smoke varies widely across the United States, because each state sets the tax imposed on the retail sale of a pack of cigarettes.
In some states, it's just a few cents.
In others, it can be several dollars.
So, with 45 million American smokers, cigarettes are big business.
So is cigarette smuggling.
Smugglers stock up on cigarettes in stats with low-tax rates or buy them tax-free on Indian reservations.
Then they transport them to states where the price of a pack is higher.
The higher the tax in the state where the smugglers unload the cigarettes, the greater their profit.
"Right now a trailer load of illegal cigarettes will net the truck driver about $2 million in profit," says Ted Deeds, spokesman for the Law Enforcement Alliance of America, a private law-and-order advocacy group.
Deeds points out that profits for the smugglers mean uncollected taxes for the states, money that's needed to fund local services, especially education.
For example, Cigarette taxes are a vital revenue source for New York State, which has the highest-priced cigarettes in the nation, almost $15 a pack.
State taxes make up more than $4 of the cost.

NBA Players Inspire African Youths

The National Basketball Association, NBA's Basketball Without Borders Africa program brought NBA players and coaches to Senegal where they trained some of the best young players on the continent.
The four-day camp kicked off in Dakar 60 young basketball players from around the African continent gathered to learn from NBA professionals.
One of the players from Cameroon said the camp gave him hope that his dream of playing professional basketball can come true.
Longtime Basketball Without Borders supporter and former NBA player Dikembe Mutombo said the camp also is a chance for others to see what Africa has to offer the world of basketball.
"I think Africa is continent that is waiting to be discovered. There are so many hidden treasures that people don't know about, and I'm happy that the NBA has taken the initiative." Mutombo said.
One of those hidden treasures who was discovered eight years ago was Luc Mbah a Moute, from Cameroon.
Now a forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, he was a camper in South Africa at the first Basketball Without Borders event.
Today he attends the camp as an NBA player who trains and inspires boys whose hopes he once shared.
"When you're out here in Africa, the NBA seems so far" he said.
"It seems not doable. So to have someone like me come back and tell them it's feasible, you guys can do it if you work hard, I think is really important."

한 두세달 쯤 전, 아파트 현관 알림판에 아파트 관리소에서 붙인 듯한 메모 한 장이 보였다.
내용인즉,
'음식물 쓰레기를 버릴 때 사용하는 비닐을 버리는 쓰레기 봉투를 없앨예정이다'
라는 것.

아파트 주차장 한 가운데에는 음식물 쓰레기를 버리는 곳이 있다.
이 곳에는 음식물 쓰레기를 모으는 큰 통들이 10여개 정도 있고, 그 옆에는 음식물 쓰레기를 담았던 비닐을 버리는 큰 쓰레기 봉투(100리터짜리)가 있었다.
사람들이 비닐에 담아온 음식물 쓰레기를 통에 버리고, 그 비닐을 버리라고 아파트 관리소 차원에서 만들어 둔 것이다.
그런데, 언제부터인가 그 쓰레기 봉투에는, 음식물 쓰레기를 담아왔던 비닐이 아닌, 일반 생활쓰레기로 보이는 것들이 버려져 있었다.
물론, 부피가 큰 생활쓰레기들은 아니지만, 소소한 쓰레기들이 담겨져 있는 것을 몇 번 보면서, 곧 이 쓰레기 봉투를 치우지 않을까 싶었는데, 결국 그런 일이 벌어지고 말았다.

그 쓰레기 봉투가 있음으로해서 음식물 쓰레기를 버릴 때 참 편리했었다.
보통 각 가정마다 음식물 쓰레기용 플라스틱 통이 있지만, 오래되면서 그 플라스틱 통이 없어져서 또는 그 플라스틱 통 자체가 너무 더러워져서, 또는 플라스틱 통에 담겨진 음식물 쓰레기에서 냄새가 나서 안 쓰는 가정이 많은 것으로 알고 있다.
우리집에도 그 플라스틱 통이 있지만, 사용하지 않고, 비닐에 담아서 그 때 그 때 갖다 버린다.
그 쓰레기 봉투가 그 곳에 있음으로해서, 음식물 쓰레기를 담아왔던 비닐을 처리하기가 참 편리했었는데, 그게 없어지면서 여간 불편한게 아니었다.
처음에는 음식물 쓰레기를 담았던 비닐을 다시 집으로 들고 갔지만, 집으로 다시 가져간다고 해서, 이미 음식물로 오염된 그 비닐을 집에 둔다는 것이 탐탁치가 않았다.
그래서, 음식물 쓰레기를 버리고 난 다음에는, 담았던 비닐을 손으로 꾹꾹 눌러서 최대한 부피를 작게 한 다음, 주변에 나와 있는 일반쓰레기 봉투에 억지로 밀어넣기도 했다.
그 비닐의 부피를 최대한 작게 한다고는 했지만, 엄연히 내 집에서 나온 쓰레기를 다른 사람의 쓰레기 봉투에 넣는다는 것이 여간 마음에 걸리는 것이 아니었다. 그렇다고 그 음식이 썩으면서 나온 물이 질질 흐르는 봉투를 들고 엘리베이터를 타고 집으로 다시 가져가는 것도 그리 좋은 방법은 아니고 생각하면서, 참 난처했었다.
그런데, 문제는 그렇게 쓰레기 봉투를 치우고 난 뒤, 음식물 쓰레기를 담아왔던 비닐을 어떻게든 깨끗하게 치우면 괜찮은데, 그 비닐을 그냥 음식물 쓰레기와 함께 음식물 쓰레기 통에 넣어버린다거나, 음식물 쓰레기통 옆에 그냥 방치해두는 사람들이 생겨난 것이다.
그럼으로해서, 음식물 쓰레기 통 주변은 온통 냄새나는 오염된 물로 뒤덮혔고, 음식물 쓰레기를 버리러갈 때 마다 짜증이 났었다.

여기서 한 가지 느낀 것은, 그 쓰레기 봉투를 치움으로 해서, 누가 피해를 보고, 누가 이득을 봤을까 하는 것이었다. 아니, 이득은 못 보더라도 누가 피해를 봤을까?
그 쓰레기 봉투에 생활쓰레기를 버렸던 사람들은 아마 99% 아파트 입주민일것이다.
자신들의 생활쓰레기를 그 쓰레기 봉투에 마구 투기(?)함으로써, 잠시 잠깐 편해질수는 있었을 것이다.
하지만, 그렇게 함으로해서, 음식물 쓰레기장 옆에 있던 쓰레기 봉투가 사라졌고, 자신들이 나중에 음식물 쓰레기를 버리고 난 뒤, 그 비닐을 처리할 때 많은 불편함을 느꼈을 것이다. 또 그 불편함을, 음식물과 함께 담아왔던 비닐을 음식물 쓰레기 통에 버리거나, 비닐을 주변에 아무렇게나 버림으로써 해소하고 있었다.
결국, 그 쓰레기 봉투를 치우게 만든 사람은 입주민들이었고, 또 쓰레기 봉투가 없어짐으로써 불편을 느끼게 되는 사람들 또한 입주민들일수 밖에 없었다.

즉, 내가 나를 불편하게 만든 것이다.
외출 중에 생활쓰레기가 발생했다면, 잠시 가방에 또는 차에 뒀다가 나중에 집에 가서 버리면 될 것인데,
그 잠시 잠깐의 불편함을 참지 못하고, 일을 저지름으로써 그 결과가 나중에는 고스란히 나에게 다시 돌아온 것이다. 또 그 불편함을 못 참고, 비닐을 주변에다 버리고...냄새나고...불쾌하고...
반복된 것이다.

개개인이 조금씩만 불편함을 감수했다면, 그 쓰레기 봉투는 그대로 있었을 것이고, 그것은 다른 사람들을 배려하는 것이 아닌, 바로 나를 더욱더 편리하게 해주는 일이 되었을텐데 참 많이 아쉬웠다.

현재는, 그 쓰레기 봉투를 치움으로써 생겨난 여러가지 부작용-음식물 쓰레기를 담은 비닐을 음식물 쓰레기 통에 같이 버리거나, 음식물 쓰레기를 비운 비닐을 그냥 주변에 널부러트려 놓은 것-때문인지, 다시 음식물 쓰레기 비닐을 버리는 쓰레기 봉투가 설치되어 있다.
예전과 달라진 것이라면, 예전에는 쓰레기 봉투 입을 있는대로 벌려놓았지만, 지금은 큰 플라스틱 통안에 쓰레기 봉투를 넣고, 그 통에 뚜껑을 만든 다음, 아주 조그마한 구멍만 뚫어서 비닐만 넣을 수 있게 만들었다는 것이다.

참 씁쓸한 풍경이 아닐 수 없다.

China Attempts to Cool Property Market

China's growing economy is attracting millions of people to its cities, fueling a housing boom and encouraging property speculation.
China's largest cities are littered with construction sites and housing prices have skyrocketed: in some areas they have doubled in the past year, raising concerns the bubble could burst, damaging the whole economy.
To prepare for a worst-case scenario, Chinese government ordered banks to test how a 60 percent drop in property prices would hit their balance sheets.
Property market in China is highly interconnected with economic growth and the government recognizes the risks, said Bei Fu, a property sector expert at investment ratings agency Standard and Poors.
"That's why they have been quite proactive in controlling the market."
If the real estate market tumbled, it could leave China's banks with vast amounts of bad loans, as happened in the United States and Europe in 2008.
Additionally, if property sales slump, demand for consumer goods such as furniture and appliances could fall, hurting factories and retailers.
The Chinese government is limiting bank loans and has told state-owned companies to rein in property speculation.
Property analysts expect prices to drop by at least 10 percent this year because of the government's efforts to cool the market.
But, many say creating a stable property market over the long term requires structural reforms such as an ownership tax.

Companies Race to Bring 3D to Consumers

With movie goers willing to pay $15 to $20 to watch 3D movies - a number of companies are betting people will want to experience the same thrill at home.
Other consumer electronic experts say widespread adoption is still five to 10 years away, companies are investing heavily to bring the new technology to more people.
In California's Silicon Valley, graphics technology company Nvidia is developing a device that brings the 3D experience to your home computer.
3D Division chief Phil Eisler, says its special glasses can deliver high resolution 3D by blinking rapidly to bring a different image to each eye.
"We have pursued the active shutter glasses, what's called the sequential frame 120 Hz method that the glasses will open left and right at 60 Hz per eye.
Then a laptop screen will work at 120 Hz and display left and right so you get a true stereoscopic 3D image, with full resolution and full color per eye," he said.
Nvidia adds that's a big improvement from the old red and green cardboard glasses.
Marketing expert John Peddie says the advantage of Nvidia's system is that it works with games that were not designed with 3D in mind.
"The game developer doesn't have to do anything. You can enjoy the game in 2D in an old monitor which is 60 Hz, or with the aid of the Nvidia stereo system you can enjoy it in 3D with their glasses and their sensor and their magic secret formula software," Peddie said.

FAA hits American Airlines with biggest fine ever

Federal aviation regulators have slapped American Airlines with the largest fine in history, charging that the carrier made thousands of unsafe flights.
The Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, said it has "proposed" a $24.2 million civil penalty for American Airlines' failure to properly inspect its MD-80 aircraft.
The airline did not follow the guidelines to prevent wires from shorting, which could cause a loss of power and possibly a fire, the FAA said.
American airline's stock price is down 1.7%.
The FAA inspections resulted in the grounding of about 1,000 American Airlines flights in early April, 2008, after the inspectors found that the airline did not properly inspect two of its airplanes.
As part of that inspection, the FAA determined that American airline operated 286 of its MD-80s on a total of 14,278 flights "while the aircraft were not in compliance with federal regulations."
FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford said the fine is considered a proposal because the airline has 30 days to respond and has the option of negotiating a smaller fine.
"There was never a flight safety issue," American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said.
"These events happened more than two years ago and we believe this action is unwarranted," he said.
"We will challenge any proposed civil penalty. We are confident we have a strong case."
Southwest Airlines had previously been the recipient of the biggest FAA fine -- of $10.2 million -- which it was able to negotiate down to $7.5 million.

Solar energy brings power to rural Africa

In rural communities of Africa -- where more than 95 percent of homes have no access to electricity -- solar energy has the power to change lives.
Globally, 1.5 billion people or one quarter of the world's population, live without electricity, according to a United Nations report.
Those in rulral africa who can afford any power at all spend large proportions of their income on kerosene for lamps or travel to larger towns to charge their batteries several times a week.
Burning kerosene causes indoor air pollution, which is estimated to kill 1.6 million people each year.
Kerosene lamps also lead to fires that cause severe burns and even deaths.
Solar energy saves families money as well as allowing children to study in the evenings and giving people access to information via radio and TV.
The light from a solar-powered bulb is also between 10 and 20 times brighter than from a kerosene lamp.
Among those who's bringing solar power to the world's poor is Rural Energy Foundation, a Dutch non-profit organization.
It has so helped 450,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa gain access to low-cost solar power.
Rural Energy Foundation runs the SolarNow program, which trains independent retailers and technicians in nine african countries to sell low-cost solar gadgets to people without electricity.
Willem Nolens, director of Rural Energy Foundation, said: "Lack of access to energy -- just as lack of clean drinking water -- is a cause of poverty, not just a result of poverty.

Malaysia uncovers nearly 100 live reptiles in bag

Malaysian airport security arrested a convicted wildlife smuggler after finding almost 100 live reptiles in his luggage, according to the country's Wildlife and National Parks Department.
Anson Wong, already convicted of trafficking in wildlife in the United States, was in transit from the Malaysian island state of Penang to the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Thursday when Malaysia Airlines staff at Kuala Lumpur airport were alerted to a bag that had broken while on a conveyor belt.
The department said its enforcement officers found 95 boa constrictors, two rhinoceros vipers and a matamata turtle inside the bag.
Boa constrictors are subject to regulations or a complete ban in international commercial trade as they are listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Politician raffles breast implants

A Venezuelan politician is offering breast enlargement as a prize in a raffle to raise funds for his parliamentary election campaign.
It's an interesting prize and there's a lot of interest," Gustavo Rojas, an opposition candidate for a National Assembly position, said campaigning in Caracas.
Cosmetic surgery, especially breast implants, is widespread in image-conscious Venezuela, whose beauty queens have won numerous international pageant titles.
Even a recession has not diminished Venezuelans' appetite for cosmetic surgery, with many people taking out loans for operations.
Rojas, of the First Justice party, said he was not too worried about potential feminist criticism or the medical details of his offer.
"The raffle is a financing mechanism, nothing else. It's the doctor who will do the operation, not me,"

picasa에서 mov파일 보기

사진관리프로그램으로, picasa를 사용하고 있다.

며칠 전, 컴퓨터를 싹 밀고, OS를 새로 설치하면서, picasa도 새로 설치했는데, 이 picasa에서 mov파일이 보이지 않는 것이다.

혹시 quicktime player를 설치하면 될까 싶어, quicktime player 최신 버전을 깔아봤지만 소용이 없었다.

분명 해당 폴더에 mov파일이 있고, 또 해당 폴더를 picasa가 항상 읽도록 해 두었으나, picasa에서 mov파일이 나타나지 않았다.

어떻게 해야 되나 싶어, 인터넷을 뒤져 봤으나, 별다른 설정없이 된다는 사람도 있고, 이것 저것 부수적인 것들(코덱, 윈도미디어플레이어 등)을 설치해도 안된다는 사람도 있고, 가지각색이었다.

그 중에, 코덱이나 DVD재생 소프트웨어인 'cyberlink dvd solution'를 설치하면 된다는 사람이 있어서, 지푸라기라도 잡는 심정으로, 우선 CD로 갖고 있는 'cyberlink dvd solution'을 먼저 설치해 보기로 했다.

결과는, 성공.

'cyberlink dvd solution'을 설치하고 나니, 바로 picasa가 그 동안 보여주지 않았던 mov파일을 import하기 시작했고, 나타난 mov파일을 더블클릭하니 picasa에서 제대로 보였다.

그런데, cyberlink dvd solution을 설치하니, 다음과 같은 것들이 전부 설치가 되어버렸다.

이것들중에 어떤 것이 mov파일을 picasa에서 보이게 해 준 것인지, 나도 확실히는 모른다.

단지, cyberlink dvd solution을 설치하고 나니, mov파일이 picasa에서 보이기 시작했다는 것 밖에는...

1. install the latest version of QuickTime Player

2. and DVD player software(ex. cyberlink dvd solution)

Teachers Spend Own Money on School Supplies

Vicky Halm spends a $1,000 a year out of her own pocket to equip her Brooklyn classroom.
She buys star stickers to help motivate her students, but she also spends a great deal on basic supplies -- such as pencils and paper -- that the parents in her area cannot afford.
In the past she would get some of that reimbursed from the Teacher's Choice fund.
But this year, the New York City Council cut the budget to $9.2 million, down almost 30% from last year's allocation.
That breaks down to just $110 per teacher which was roughly $4 per student per year.
Halm is not alone.
A whopping 97% of teachers often dip into their own pockets to buy classroom supplies, according to a national survey.
Last year, teachers spent more than $350 on average from their own income on school supplies and instructional materials.
"The downfall of the economy has meant severe reductions in education." said Al Campos of the National Education Association.
Parents are also strapped for cash, so asking them to buy extra supplies isn't an option either, said Ruby Sheets, a third grade teacher in Brooklyn.
"In areas that are more affluent, teachers can get away with asking parents to pay for school trips, or supply paper and tissues for the classroom."
"In our neighborhood and in this economy, the situation is more difficult, and we can't ask our students to supplement what we can't provide."

요며칠, 미국의 NASA에서 뭔가 중대발표를 한다고 해서, 세상이, 아니 한국만 그런건지 모르겠지만, 많이 떠들석 했나보다.

그런데, 막상 한 언론사에서 NASA가 걸어놓은 엠바고를 깨뜨리고 미리 발표를 해 버렸는데, 그 내용은, 한 지구생물학 박사가 미국의 한 호수에서 비소 등의 독성분이 있는 환경에서도 살아가는 미생물을 발견했다는 것인데, 이는 곧, 지구와는 전혀 다른 환경에서도 생명체가 존재할 수 있다는 것이다.

나는, 이렇게 넓은 우주에 생명체라는 것이 이 지구에만 있으라는 법은 없다고 생각한다.
나는 외계인이 이 넓은 우주 어딘가에는 반드시 있을거라고 생각하고 있다. 100%.
하지만, 외계인을 연구한다거나 외계인을 찾는다는 연구자들의 말을 인터넷 등을 통해서 들으면서, 나는 몇 가지 이상한 점을 발견할 수 있었다. 그 연구자들은 하나같이, 외계인이 살 수 있는 행성의 조건이라는 것을 들먹이는데, 그 조건이라는 것은 대체로 다음과 같다.

"한 항성 주위에 형성되어 있는 행성계에서 어떤 행성에 생명체가 발생할 조건이 되기 위해서는 모항성에서 적당한 거리만큼 떨어져 있어야 한다.(생명체 거주가능 영역)"

즉, 그 해당 행성에는 물이 있어야 하고, 또 대기가 어느 정도 그 외계생명체의 생명을 유지해 줄 수 있는 정도로 있어야만 한다는 것이다.

하지만, 그 연구자들이 말하는 그 '생명체'라는 것이 어떻게 정의가 내려진 것인지는 잘 모르겠지만, 나는 궁금한 것이, 왜 외계인이 꼭 지구인과 같이 '물'이라는 것이 있어야만 살 수 있고, '산소'가 있어서 '숨'을 쉴 수 있어야만 살 수 있다고 생각하느냐 하는 것이다.

'물'과 '산소'는 이 거대한 우주안에서, 티끌보다 작은, 거대한 우주에 비하면 거의 원자크기보다 몇 백억배나 작다고 해도 틀리지 않을 정도로 작은, 이 지구라는 한 행성에 사는 이들에게만 필요한 것일 뿐이다.
왜 다른 곳에 있을지도 모르는 그 외계인들도 이 '물'과 '산소'가 필요하다고 생각할까?

아마 그 연구자들은, 외계인이 있다면, 그들도
'뇌'가 있어서 생각할 수 있고 또 지적으로 상당히 발달되어 있고,
'말'을 할 줄 알아서 서로 대화하고,
'눈'이 있어서, 사물을 볼 수 있고,
'손'이 있어서, 뭔가를 잡을 수 있고,
'다리'가 있어서, 다른 곳으로 이동할 수 있을 거라고 생각할 것이다.

그런데, 이런 '뇌'나 '말', '눈' 등은 전부 이 작은 행성, 지구라는 동네에 살고 있는 것들에게 있는 것이지, 외계인들에게는 이런 것들이 없을 수도 있지 않을까?

왜 연구자들은, 외계인들도,
'뇌'라는 것이 있어야만 생각을 할 수 있다고 생각할까?
'눈'이라는 것이 있어야만 뭔가를 볼 수 있다고 생각할까?

세티(SETI) 프로젝트라는 것이 있다. 이는 'Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence'의 약자로, 외계 지적생명체를 찾기 위한 일련의 활동을 통칭적으로 부르는 말이다. SETI 프로젝트는 외계 행성들로부터 오는 전자기파를 찾아서 외계생명체를 찾는 것을 그 주 목적으로 하고 있다.

'전자기파' 즉 '전파'를 사용해서 외계의 지적생명체를 찾는다는 것이다. 외계에서 오는 전파를 잡고 분석해서 외계인을 찾아보겠다는 것이다.

외계인이 있다면, 그들이 우리 지구인들이 쓰는 '전자기파'라는 것을 쓸까? 아니, 그런게 있는 줄은 알고 있을까? 알고 있다면, 우리 지구인들이 쓰는 용도와 같은 용도로 쓸까?
전자기파말고 먼 곳까지 뭔가를 보낼 수 있는 것이 없을까?
이 우주상에는 과연 지구인만이 알고 있을 전자기파만이 먼 곳까지 뭔가를 보낼 수 있는 것일까?

이 지구 말고도 우주 어딘가에 다른 '생명체'가 있을 수 있다고 생각하는 건, 지극히 당연한 지적 호기심이라고 생각하지만, 그 다른 '생명체'를 찾는데, 너무 지구에 사는 생명체를 기준으로 생각하는게 아닌가 싶다.

London launches bike sharing scheme

Six thousand matching bicycles are about hit the streets of London as the city launches its ambitious public bike sharing scheme.
The initiative will allow commuters and tourists to take bikes from 400 docking stations, spaced at 300 yard intervals, for short trips around central London.
For an access fee of £1 ($1.53) a day or £45 ($68) a year, cyclists will be able to use the bikes for free for the first thirty minutes, with a increasing fee for longer periods.
Users can return for further free half hours as often as they want within a day.
The launch is a major step forward in London Mayor, Boris Johnson's ambition to increase cycling in the city by 400 percent between the years 2000 and 2025.
An estimated 500,000 journeys a day are already made by bike in the British capital.
"This will change London forever," says Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's Transport Advisor.
"We want these bikes to become icons of London just like red buses and black taxis.
We think London will be proud of these bikes, giving everyone an opportunity to use the cleanest, greenest form of transportation.
Ranger said the bikes had been designed to cover 60,000 miles over their 15-year lifetime, spending 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on the streets in come rain or come shine.
He also said a fleet of electric vehicles would re-distribute bikes if they ended up with too many at popular drop-off spots.
In Paris, bikes famously gather at docking stations at the bottom of hills, as no-one wanted to cycle them back up.

McDonald's Turns to Yuan for Funding

McDonald's Corporation has become the first foreign company to issue a bond in the Chinese currency, as Beijing takes new steps to increase the use of the yuan in international transactions.
The U.S. fast-food giant has borrowed 200 million yuan, the equivalent of 29 million dollars, by issuing a bond to investors in Hong Kong.
With the help of Standard Chartered Bank, McDonald's took advantage of recently relaxed rules in the use of the Chinese currency.
Sundeep Bhandari, regional head of global markets in Northeast Asia at Standard Chartered, says the McDonald's bond will be the first of many from foreign companies.
"We are talking to other clients who are interested to issue in Hong Kong. Obviously, the clients who are most keen to look into this are those who have presence in China so they can raise funds in Hong Kong and remit back to China," said Bhandari.
Recently, China's central bank allowed foreign companies to issue yuan bonds in Hong Kong, to promote the use of the currency in international capital markets.
In the past, China had more tightly restricted use of its currency.
Foreign business in China had to exchange yuan to U.S. dollars before they could transfer money to their home country.
But China's economy is dependent on exports, and that increases demand to use the yuan overseas.

Fit heart can slow brain ageing

Keeping your heart fit and strong can slow down the ageing of your brain, US researchers say.
A Boston University team found healthy people with sluggish hearts that pumped out less blood had "older" brains on scans than others.
The team studied 1,500 people to observe how the brain shrinks as it ages.
A poor cardiac output aged the brain by nearly two years on average.
The link was seen in younger people in their 30s who did not have heart disease, as well as elderly people who did.
Lead researcher Dr Angela Jefferson said: "These participants are not sick people. A very small number have heart disease. The observation that nearly a third of the entire sample has low cardiac index and that lower cardiac index is related to smaller brain volume is concerning and requires further study."
The participants with smaller brain volumes on magnetic resonance imaging did not show obvious clinical signs of reduced brain function.
But the researchers say the shrinkage may be an early sign that something is wrong.
More severe shrinkage or atrophy occurs with dementia.
Dr Jefferson said there were several theories for why reduced cardiac index - how much blood the heart pumps out relative to body size - might affect brain health.
For example, a lower volume of blood pumping from the heart might reduce flow to the brain, providing less oxygen and fewer nutrients needed for brain cells.

Living alone costs singletons an extra £250,000 over a lifetime compared to couples, it is claimed.
A new study suggests carrying the full burden of a mortgage and bills all adds up.
Researchers compared the spending of people living alone with couples.
According to the findings single people are paying a hefty penalty for going it alone.
The biggest aspect of the "singles tax" is housing because people who live alone have to pay an average of £7,080 a year on mortgage or rent compared with £3,804 for someone living with a partner.
The lack of opportunity for bulk buying at the supermarket is additional penalties.
The findings were given added impetus by the projection that the number of single-person households could reach 9.5 million over the next decade.
"If you live alone the chances are you're not going to go on holiday so much either - 43% of people who live alone don't go on holiday," says one researcher.
You have to spend on necessities rather than having fun.
Hannah Betts, who writes the column Things You Only Know If You're Single in The Times, accepts the fact that it is expensive living alone.
But she dismisses the study's point that single people can't afford to have fun.
"Part of being single is having this carpe diem lifestyle - when you're single one's social life is one's life."

British dogs piling on the puppy fat

Over a third of British dogs are overweight, a veterinary charity has warned on Tuesday and the proportion could rise to nearly a half in three years if owners do not change their pets' habits.
Poor diet and lack of exercise are the main culprits, the PDSA said.
In a survey of some 30,000 dogs in the UK over the past four years, it found 35 percent were heavier than they should be.
It also found that owners gave them leftovers, fatty meats, cheese, chips and biscuits.
A similar PDSA study four years ago found that 21 percent of British dogs were overweight.

Too hot to be an engineer or prison guard?
Good looks can kill a woman's chances of snaring jobs considered "masculine," according to a study by the University of Colorado Denver Business School.
Attractive women faced discrimination when they applied for jobs where appearance was not seen as important.
These positions included job titles like manager of research and development, director of finance, mechanical engineer and construction supervisor.
They were also overlooked for categories like director of security, hardware salesperson, prison guard and tow-truck driver.
"In these professions being attractive was highly detrimental to women," researcher Stefanie Johnson said in a statement, adding that attractive women tended to be sorted into positions like receptionist or secretary.

'Degree in Gucci' to be launched

For anyone thinking that student life is about cheap beer and second-hand coats, a degree course is offering an immersion into indulgent luxury.
A masters degree is being launched this autumn in luxury retail management at the International University of Monaco.
35 international students will be following a syllabus looking at essentials such as shoes, jewellery, watches, cars and yachts.
The course has been developed in collaboration with brands including Gucci and Ralph Lauren.
For work experience, there will be the challenge of a "seven-month immersion internship" in a luxury boutique.
This is the latest example of degrees linked to specific areas of retailing.
The students will be learning about, rather than enjoying, the world of luxury brands.
And the university says the course has been created in response for the demand for staff who are specialists in the luxury market.
"Gone are the days when it was easy to sell luxury goods based on the allure of the brand alone," says a spokeswoman for the university.
The postgraduate students will be taught the "history, main trends and competitive dynamics of the retail luxury industry".
They will learn about running shops and sales teams.
For a more theoretical approach, there will also be a study of "aesthetics, semiotics and artistic appreciation" and "codes, symbols and rituals in luxury retailing".

Exposing Women to New Career Options

Women have made big strides in many career fields that were once dominated by men - from law to medicine to the physically-demanding work of police and the military.
But construction work still is largely considered "a man's job."
A non-profit organization, CASA de Maryland, however, is training women for the construction trades in an effort to build self-esteem and better-paying careers.
Tona Cravioto is a organization senior manager for vocational training.
"The purpose of this training is to prepare women to have access to high-paying jobs in construction," says Cravioto.
"Our statistic shows there is a huge difference between the traditional jobs for women and construction jobs. For example, you can get cleaning jobs for $8 per hour versus the minimum for a construction job is $13 an hour."
Over the nine-week course, participants learn the basics of electrical, carpentry, flooring, plumbing, drywall and tile work.
The Women's Economic Security Campaign, an advocacy group for low-income women, points out in a recent report that 99 percent of roofers are men earning an average wage of $16.17 per hour, while 98 percent of preschool teachers are women earning $11.48 per hour.
The report suggests it makes sound economic sense for low-income women to begin looking for a way into the construction business.

Tongue piercings 'can cause damage to teeth'

People with tongue piercings risk developing gaps between their front teeth as a result of playing with the stud, US researchers have found.
The research team says as well as potentially requiring cosmetic work, people can develop infections and chipped teeth.
They said that people with tongue piercings were likely to push the metal stud up against their teeth and consequently cause gaps and other problems to arise.
Sawsan Tabbaa, professor of orthodontics at the University of Buffalo, detailed the 26-year-old's case in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics.
The patient had no space between her teeth before wearing a barbell-shaped tongue stud.
However, a space had appeared between her upper front teeth over the course of the seven years she had worn it for, because the metal bar was pushed against and between the teeth.
The patient ended up needing braces to correct the gap in her teeth.
Professor Tabbaa concluded that tongue piercings could result in serious injuries, not just to teeth.
Piercings have also been associated with haemorrhages, infections, trauma to the gums and, in the worst cases, brain abscesses.
Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: "In order to avoid such health problems, along with the spiralling costs of any related treatment, I would advise people to stay clear of tongue piercings."

Chevrolet's Battery-Powered Volt Now on Sale in US

Dealers in select parts of the United States began taking orders for the Battery-Powered Chevrolet Volts on Tuesday.
Some analysts think that the vehicle could revitalize the struggling American auto industry with its high-tech battery component and environmentally friendly power source.
The $41,000 price tag comes with a $7,500 tax credit, making it cost competitive against other electric or hybrid vehicles.
But here's the difference.
Fully charged, the battery in the volt enables the car to travel for 64 kilometers on electrical power alone.
Then, the car automatically switches to a gas-powered engine, which acts as a generator that can power through 483 more kilometers.
Critics argue the price of a Volt is higher than a regular small compact car and the gas savings won't offset that cost.
Others say the back seat is small.
General Motor is staking a lot on the Volt's success.
The auto company shut down most of its facilities for the summer, but the assembly plant in Hamtramck, Michigan remained open for employee to get the Volt rolling.
"It's our lifesaver. I mean, it keeps us working," One employee said.
GM is investing $700 million into the vehicle.
A company manager tells VOA that they expects to lose money initially, but hopes to make the Volt profitable in future years.

New badge for business-savvy scouts

"Be Prepared" -- the Scouts' long-standing motto -- takes on another dimension with the launch of a new badge for entrepreneurship.

Air Canada repairs wheelchair 'after Twitter pressure'

Pressure from Twitter users has made Air Canada fix a terminally ill boy's wheelchair after it was damaged during a flight.
Appeals for help from the aunt of 10-year-old Tanner Bawn went viral on the micro-blogging website.
An airline spokesman said they had acted as soon as they had heard about it.
Tanner has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and is immobile without the chair.
His $15,000 wheelchair arrived at New York's La Guardia Airport in pieces, during a trip to the city.
Tanner along with his mother and aunt, who were waiting in a hotel room in Manhattan for 24 hours, were ecstatic after users of the micro-blogging site helped grab the attention of the airline.
Air Canada has contacted an repair centre after hearing about the boy's problems from other Twitter users and had the specialised chair returned to Tanner a day later.

별똥비가 쏟아진다...

날씨가 점점 추워진다.
이렇게 날씨가 추워질때면, 한 가지 기대되는 것이 있으니, 바로 '별똥비'다.
참고로, 한자어로는 유성우, 영어로는 meteor shower라 불리는 것을 이제부터는 '별똥비'라 부를 것이다.
물론, 이것은 공식적인 단어는 아니다. 그냥 나 혼자 지어서 부르는 이름이다.
사철내내 별똥비가 쏟아지기는 하지만, 이렇게 추울때면 별이 더 잘보이고, 또 별똥비도 더 잘보이기 때문이다.

매년 많은 별똥비가 떨어지기는 하지만, 그 중에서 볼만한 별똥비는 대여섯개 정도가 된다.
4월경에는 거문고자리에서 별똥비가 떨어지는데, 아주 어두운 곳에서 볼 때, 최고 많이 떨어질 때는 시간당 약 15개 정도가 떨어지는 것을 볼 수 있다. 8월의 페르세우스 별똥비나 12월의 쌍둥이자리 별똥비같은 경우에는 시간당 최고 80여개까지도 볼 수 있다.

지난 11월 17일에 있었던 사자자리 별똥비는 그 동안 최고의 장관을 보여주는 별똥비였으나, 올해는 반달때문에 그다지 장관을 연출하지는 못한 듯 하다.(시간당 15개 정도?)

여기, 별똥비의 장관을 보기 위한 몇 가지 팁을 소개한다.
참고로 별똥비는 혜성에서 떨어져 나온 작은 입자들이 지구 대기와 아주 빠른 속도로 충돌하기 때문에 생기는 것이다. 물론, 별똥별은 밤, 낮, 눈이 오나 비가 오나, 사철 언제고 가리지 않고 떨어지긴 하지만, 별똥비는 그 중에서도 특히 많은 별똥별이 한꺼번에 떨어지기 때문에 그렇게 이름을 붙인 것이다. 마치 비처럼...
하지만, 진짜 비처럼 우리 머리 위로는 절대 떨어지지 않는다. 그러니 별똥비를 보면서 괜히 걱정할 필요는 없다. 혹시 머리 위로 떨어지지 않나~하는...
만에 하나, 당신 주변으로 별똥별이 떨어졌다면 주워서 잘 간수하시기를 바란다. 그리고, 인터넷에서 운석에 관해 찾아보면, 아주 비싼 값에 팔 수도 있을 것이다. 떨어진 별똥별을 주울 때 일어나는 모든 일은 모두 본인의 책임이니, 나한테 뭐라고 하지 마시길...

첫 번째는 달(moon)에 관한 것이다.
별이든 행성이든 밤에 천체를 보는데 있어서, 달은 전혀 도움이 되지 않는다. 별똥비를 볼 때 다른 천체들을 볼 때보다는 달의 방해를 덜 받기는 하지만, 일단 달이 떴다면, 웬만하면 해당 별똥비는 보지 말고 건너뛰고 다음 별똥비를 기다리는 것도 괜찮을 것 같다. 괜히 추운데 나가서 떨고, 감기 걸려서 콧물 훌쩍이지 마시고...
하지만, 올해 2010년 페르세우스자리 별똥비와 사자자리 별똥비가 보일 때도 달이 뜨긴 하겠지만, 다른 어느 때보다 훨씬 별똥별들이 밝을 것으로 예상되기 때문에, 달이 있더라도 이 두 별똥비는 충분히 볼 가치가 있을 것이다.

두 번째는 보는 위치와 날씨 조건이다.
가능하면 가로등이나 건물의 불빛으로 밤하늘이 밝아진 도시에서 멀리 떨어져 있고, 구름이 없는 곳에서 보는 것이 좋다.

보통 별똥비에는 별자리 이름이 붙는다. 페르세우스자리 별똥비, 사자자리 별똥비 등.
이는 별똥비가 주로 그 별자리 방향에서 떨어지기 때문에 이름 붙여진 것이며, 실제로 그 별자리에서 별똥비가 떨어지는 것이 아니다. 그리고 별똥비가 떨어지는 중심 위치를 보통 '복사점(radiant)'이라고 부른다.

세 번째는 옷차림.
별똥비를 볼 때 옷차림은, 따뜻할수록 좋다. 몸을 둘러쌀 담요와 귀도리, 장갑, 솜이 들어간 바지 등이 있으면 더 좋다.
주변에 별똥비를 보는 다름 사람들이 있다고 해서 멋 부릴 필요는 없다. 멋 부리다가 얼어죽는 수도 있다.
아니면 최소한 감기에 걸려 병원에 들락거리거나...

네 번째는 보는 자세.
별똥비를 볼 때, 사실 아무 자세로 봐도 된다. 꼭 어떻게 봐야 된다는 법칙은 없다.
의자에 앉아서 봐도 되고, 서서 봐도 되고, 사랑하는 사람과 꼭 껴안고 봐도 된다.
보는 자세에 정답은 없지만, 편하게 볼 수 있는 자세는 있다.
바로 누워서 보는 것.
의자에 앉아서 또는 서서 봐도 되지만, 하늘에서 나타나는 별똥비를 보려면 몸 상체와 머리 뒤통수가 거의 90도로 꺾이기 때문에, 오랫동안 그 자세로 있기는 무리다. 더구나 추운 날씨라면 더더욱...
별똥비는 1~2분만에 금방 슉~슉~슊 떨어지고 마는 것이 아니라, 몇 시간에 걸쳐서 보이기 때문이다.
따라서, 누워서 별똥비를 보게되면, 아주 편안하게 별똥비를 볼 수 있다.
누워서 볼 때 한 가지 주의할 점은, 대부분 이런 별똥비를 야외에서 보게 되는데, 날씨가 매우 추울 경우 차가운 바닥이나 풀밭등에 누워있다보면, 입이 돌아갈 수 있다.
따라서 두꺼운 매트 등을 먼저 바닥에 깔고 누워서 보는 것이 좋다.
한 가지 더...
따뜻하게 해서 누워서 별똥비를 보는 것도 좋은데, 이렇게 오래 누워있다가 잠시 눈을 감았는데, 눈을 떠보니 이미 해가 중천에 떠 있을 수 있으니 주의할 것.

마지막으로, 보는 기구 즉 관측 기구에 관한 것.
밤하늘에서 일어나는 장관을 보는 것인 만큼, 성단이나 행성들을 볼 때처럼, 아마 성능이 좋은 천체망원경이나, 어린 아이가 들고 있기에 버거울 정도로 무거운 쌍안경 등을 염두에 두고 있을지도 모르겠다.
별똥비를 볼 때는 이런 것들은 모두 필요없다. 별똥비는 아주 넓은 밤하늘에서 일어나는 일인 만큼, 이런 망원경 등으로 보게 되면, 아마 별똥비를 보는 재미가 반감, 아니 완전히 없어질지도 모른다.
오로지 눈(eye), 맨 눈만 있으면 된다.
별똥비를 보기위해서는 천체망원경이나 쌍안경 등은 절대 필요하지 않으니 괜히 부모님에게 사달라고 조르거나, 컴퓨터 등을 사기 위해 모아놓은 목돈을 천체망원경 등을 사는데 쓰는 우를 범하지 말 것.

하지만, 이런 별똥비의 장관을 즐기기 위해 반드시 필요한 것 한 가지가 있다.
바로 어두운 붉은 색 불빛이 나오는 손전등이다.
별똥비를 제대로 보기 위해서는 가능한 한 불빛이 적은 곳에서 봐야 하는데, 별똥비를 보기 위해 모든 준비를 마친 상태에서 별자리 책에서 별똥비가 떨어지는 별자리를 찾아본다거나 자동차나 숙소 등에서 뭔가를 가져와야 할 경우, 상당히 난감할 수 있다.
이에 대비해서 대부분 손전등을 가져갈테지만, 그냥 밝은 불빛이 나오는 손전등을 사용하게 되면, 손전등을 사용하고 난 후, 손전등의 밝기에 따라 다르겠지만, 손전등을 끈 후에도 꽤 오랫동안 밤하늘의 별이 전혀 안 보일 수도 있다. 이는 밝은 곳에 있다가 갑자기 어두운 영화관안에 들어갔을 때, 잠시동안이지만, 아무것도 보이지 않는다는 사실을 떠올려 보면 알 수 있다.

American Billionaires Promise Their Wealth to Charity

Forty of the richest families and individuals in the United States, including at least 30 billionaires, have pledged to give at least half of their wealth to charity.
They announced their intentions Wednesday as part of a campaign started by famed investor Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

Buffett and Gates launched the "Giving Pledge" campaign in June, trying to convince the wealthiest of Americans to give their fortunes to worthy causes during their lifetime or after they die.
Buffet called the 40 pledges a terrific start.
Those making the commitment includes some of the country's best-known billionaires, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, media mogul Ted Turner, oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens and "Star Wars" movie director George Lucas.
Buffett and Gates say the "Giving Pledge" campaign is meant to inspire charitable giving and does not collect money for any specific charities.
Earlier this year, the U.S. magazine Forbes ranked Gates as the world's second richest person with an estimated fortune of $53 billion.
Buffett was ranked third with $47 billion.

In 2006, Buffett pledged to donate most of his wealth to Gates' foundation and four other charities.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation raises billions of dollars to fight poverty and disease around the world.

Toyota profits rise after sales recover

Japanese carmaker Toyota has reported its biggest quarterly profit in two years, with sales recovering as the company seeks to put the recall of millions of vehicles behind it.
Toyota made a net profit of 190.4bn yen ($2.2bn) in the three months to June, bouncing back from a 77.8bn yen loss in the same period a year ago.

The company also raised its sales and profit forecast for the full year.
It now expects to sell 7.38 million cars globally and make a net profit of 340bn yen in its financial year, which runs from April 2010 to March 2011.
In May, it had forecast sales of 7.29 million and a profit of about 310bn yen.
However, analysts have much higher expectations.
"The fact that they lifted their forecast is good, but it still seems a bit weak, and I wonder if this isn't a bit too conservative," commented Hiroaki Osakabe at Chibagin Asset Management in Tokyo.

Toyota was already struggling with the financial crisis that hit global demand for vehicles, when it was forced to issue a string of recalls because of safety problems.
The company has recalled about 10 million vehicles globally in the past year for various problems including faulty floor mats, sticky accelerator pedals, braking software glitches and steering malfunctions.
Its reputation has taken a hammering, particularly in the US where it is facing hundreds of lawsuits.

대중교통, 즉 버스나 지하철을 타고 다니다보면, 그 안에는 별의별 사람들이 다 있다.
남에게 전혀 피해를 안 주는 대다수의 시민들을 제외한, 일부 진상들은 정말 신경쓰이게 만든다.
많은 진상들이 있지만, 오늘은 전화통화를 하는 진상들에 대해 씹어봐야겠다.

이제는, 버스나 지하철에서 워낙 많은 사람들이 그냥 대놓고 통화를 해대니, 그냥 그려러니~하고,
지나치려 하지만, 그 중에서도 유독 짜증나게 하는 진상들이 있어, 이들에 대해 이야기하려한다.

1. 녹음기형
어제 버스에서, 누군가 통화하는 소리를 들었다. 버스 중간쯤 서 있던 남자였는데, 그렇게 큰 목소리는 아니었지만, 위치상 버스안의 모든 사람들이 귀를 귀울이지 않아도 다 들을 수 있는 정도였다.

대충 이런 통화내용.
대략 짐작하기에, 어제(또는 그 전) 같이 술을 마셨는데, '상대방'이 술자리에서 좀 진상을 부렸나보다.
그래서, 그 '버스남'에게 전화를 해서, 걱정스런 말투로 당시 무슨 일이 있었는지를 묻는 듯한 상황.
그 '버스남'은 거의 15분넘게 '세상 사는 얘기만 했다'는 말만 계속 되풀이한다.
흐미~ 무슨 외국인 대상 한국어 교육 방송도 아니고, 주구장창 그 얘기만 한다.
(사실 중간중간에 다른 말들도 했던 것 같은데, 거의 기억이 안난다. 남의 말 엿듯는 취미가 있는 것도 아니니...)
아마 옆에 한국말을 조금 아는 외국인이 있었으면, 좋은 한국어 교육 교재가 되지 않았을까 싶다.
15분동안 계속 같은 말만 해대니...그것도 토시만 약간 바꿔가면서...
버스 안에서 그냥 창 밖만 보고 가도, 이런 류의 대화를 들으면 정말 짜증난다.
그런데, 책을 보면서 가는 중에는 폭행사태가 일어나지 않은 것이 다행일 정도다.
다 들으라고 하는 전화통화 자체도 짜증나는데 한 술 더 떠서, 같은 말만...
정말 설상가상이다.
(이런 경우, 즉 했던 말 또 하고 했던 말 또 하고... 정말 많이 봤다.)

2. 자랑형
언젠가 지하철에서 들은 통화내용이다.
아~ 물론, 도청을 한 건 아니고, 역시나 목소리 큰 것을 자랑으로 삼는 어떤 진상이 통화내용을 지하철에 타고 있는 사람들 다 들으라고 까발렸기 때문에 들을 수 있었다.
친구를 만나러 가는데, 다른 친구들은 이미 약속장소에 도착해 있고, 그 '지하철남'은 이제 지하철을 타고 가고 있는 중. 아마 그 약속장소 지리를 잘 모르는 듯 하다.

지하철남 : 이제 가고 있어. 어디로 가면 되?
상대방 : (*^&(*%*&%()&*)
지하철남 : 거기? 거기가 어디지?
상대방 : *(%^&*$*(*()&)(( <- 아마 장소에 대해 열심히 설명하는 중?
지하철남 : 어, 어, 그래...어, 어, 어, 잘 모르겠는데... 머 다른 큰 건물 같은 거 없어?

지하철남 : 어, 어, 어, 거긴 또 어디야? 알아듣게 좀 해봐~

이렇게 두 남자는 서로 동문서답을 주고 받으며 한참을 가더니, 급기야...

지하철남 : 에이~ 잘 모르겠다. XX역에 내려서 다시 전화하께

라는, 아주 깔끔한 멘트로 대화를 정리하셨다. 크~
그 큰 목소리로 떠들어대는 통화내용을 들으니, 그 진상은 약속장소의 지리에 대해 전혀 모르고 있는 것이다.
아무것도 모르면서, 왜 약속장소 근처 큰 건물 이름을 대라고 하는데???
상대방이 몇 번을 가르쳐줘도 모르더구만. 그럼 아예 전혀 모르는거잖아~
그럼 애초부터 그냥 '가고 있는데, 내가 잘 모르니까 XX역에 내려서 다시 전화할께'라고 하면 끝날것을, 왜 그 큰 목소리로 떠들어대냐고... 그 좁은데서... 좋은 목소리도 아니더구만~
친구만나러 가는 거 자랑하나??? 그 동안 '따'였던거야???

3. 음악회형
이건 어제 처음 겪은 거다. 이번에는 아줌마. 한 40대 초중반쯤?
지하철에서 책을 읽고 있는데, 어디서 핸드폰 버튼 소리로 음악회를 하는 줄 알았다.
연신,
'띵 띵 땡~ 똥 똥 띵 띵 똥~ 땡 땡 띵띵띵 똥띵땡...(반복)'
그랬던 것이었던 것이었다.
핸드폰을 '소리'(진동말고)로 해 놓고, 문자를 보내시는 중이었던 것이었던 것이었따.
10대들같이 빨리 문자를 쓰지 못할 것 같으면, 진동으로 바꾸고 보내든지, 아니면, 그냥 전화 한 통 때려서 말로 하면 될것을, 그걸 끝까지 잡고 '띵 똥 땡'거리면서 문자를 보내시고 계신다. 정말 인간승리다.
앞에 앉아서 졸고 있던 아저씨가 슬쩍 올려다본다.
나도 그 아줌마를 살짝 째려본다.
그래도 계속 '띵 똥 땡'거린다. 정말 불굴의 의지라는 말로밖에 표현할 수가 없다.
조금만 더 하면 한 마디 해야지~하고 마음 먹고 있는데, 마침 문자를 다 썼나보다.
휴~
하고 안도의 한숨을 내 쉬는 찰나, 허거거거걱~
그 아줌마한테 답문자가 날라왔나보다.
'띵~동'하면서 문자도착 알림음이 들리고, 예의 그 아줌마는 문자를 확인하신다.
허걱, 큰일이다.
이번에 만약 한 번 더 그러면 한 마디 해야지~하고 벼르고 있는데, 답문자를 안 보내신다.
휴~
마지막 안도의 한숨을 내쉰다.

핸드폰 문자...보낼 수 있다. 대 놓고 다 들으라고 떠드는 것 보다 낫다.
핸드폰 문자...늦게 쓸수도 있다. 늦게 쓰는게 죄는 아니다. 나도 그리 빨리 쓰는 편은 아니다.
핸드폰 문자...목소리로 듣는 것과는 또 다른 낭만을 느낄 수도 있다.
근데 그걸 왜 '소리'로 해 놓고 쓰냐고요~ 참~나~

4. 기타
닭살형. 버스안에서 남자가 아주 간드러지는 목소리로 여친한테 전화를 한다(전화가 온건가??? 어쨋든).
지금 어디냐, 오늘 어디 갔다 왔냐, 밥은 먹었냐, 무슨 반찬하고 먹었냐, 고기냐 채소냐, 밥은 직접 해 먹었냐 사먹었냐, 집에서 뭐 했냐... 등등.
써 놓은 대화내용을 보면, 꼭 무슨 스토커 같다는 느낌이지만, 실제 통화내용은 주변 사람들이 모두 닭이 되어 날아갈 것 같은 상황.(무슨 색깔 옷을 입고 있냐는 류의 질문도 했던 것 같은데, 기억이 잘...)
그런 류의 통화를 20분가까이 하더라.
나~ 완전히~ 닭됐어~
A/S형. 버스 맨 뒷자리 어떤 아저씨. 컴퓨터 수리점을 하거나, 직장에서 전산실과 같은 곳에 근무하거나, 사무실에서 컴퓨터에서 대해서 좀 많이 아는 사람이거나. 고객 또는 동료에게서 전화가 온 상황.
컴퓨터에 주변기기(프린터? 스캐너? 등)를 설치했는데 작동이 안되는 상황.
그런데, 그 아저씨가 상대방과 통화하는 내용을 들어보니, 상대방은 컴퓨터를 전혀 다룰 줄 모르는 사람인 듯. 끄고 켜는 것만 아는 듯.
하드웨어 인터페이스, 주변기기에 있는 단추, 컴퓨터 본체에 있는 단추 등을 설명하는데, 'USB'나 '케이블' 등 일상적인 컴퓨터 용어가 아니라, 그냥 '긴 선', '본체 뒤에 보면 이렇게 저렇게 생긴 xxx가 있는데' 등 아주 원초적으로 설명을 하는 걸로 봐서, 이건 전화상으로 설명을 해서 컴퓨터를 제대로 쓸 수 있게 할 수가 없는 상황인 것 같았다.
계속 했던 이야기 또 하고, 또 하고...
작지도 않은 목소리로 거의 15분넘게 그렇게 씨름을 하고 있었다.
내가 먼저 버스에서 내리는 바람에 내 기억에 15분이지, 아마 한 30분은 넘게 그 상대방과 전화로 씨름을 하지 않았을까 싶다.
뭐, 투철한 A/S정신... 칭찬해 주고 싶다.
동료를 도와주고 싶은 아름다운 마음 씀씀이... 정말 아름다운 세상이다.
BUT !
나도 전화상으로 컴퓨터에 대해 물어오는 전화를 받은 적이 있지만, 전화상으로 컴퓨터에 대해 알려주는 거, 그거 그리 쉬운일이 아니다.
특히나, 상대방이 어느 정도 컴퓨터에 대해 잘 알고 있는 상황이 아니면, 이건 거의 쇠 귀에 경읽기나 다름없다. 내가 직접 가서 봐주거나, 그럴 상황이 아니라면, 주변 사람들에게 도움을 청하라고 한다.
투철한 A/S정신도 좋고, 아름다운 마음씨도 좋은데, 될만한 상황이라면 백번 양보할 수 있겠지만, 되지도 않을 상황을 왜 그렇게 길게 끄는건지...그것도 주변 사람들한테 피해를 주면서까지.

버스나 지하철안에서 전화가 오면 어떤 내용인지는 먼저 받아봐야 알 수 있다.
전화를 건 사람이 누구인지, 어떤 용건인지 등을 보면 통화를 길게 해야 하는지, 간단하게 끝낼 수 있는지 금방 파악할 수 있을 것이다.
금방 끝낼 수 있다면, 금방 끝내고, 길게 해야 할 통화라면, 버스든 지하철이든 잠시 내려서, 통화를 끝내고 다시 타도록 하는 건 어떨지.

Many African Countries Mark 50 Years in 2010

Seventeen African countries are marking(1) half a century of independence this year.
Celebrations are being held in Africa and outside the continent, but analysts say Africa needs to see much more progress before celebration is really warranted.

The government of France, a former colonial power in much of West Africa, recently invited African leaders to commemorate 50 years of independence for 14 of its former colonies.
The president of Cameroon, Paul Biya, thanked his host, French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
"I want to thank you warmly for this initiative," said Biya.
"It allows us to re-examine and accept our common history, to reassert our desire to build our future, even further than ever before."
Mr. Biya has been in power since 1982, for more than half of Cameroon's independence, and has maintained very close ties with France.
But as in many other African nations, Cameroon's independence has not solved all its problems.
Despite its many resources, parts of the country still suffer from malnutrition.
Independence for many Africans has also been marked(2) by conflicts, coups and disease.

In terms of the next 50 years, Steve McDonald from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, says he would like to see civil society groups gain more and more importance.

Chinese minister blasts 'vulgar' media

China's culture minister has lashed out at the country's broadcasters and publishers, saying that much of what they produce is vulgar and kitsch.
Cai Wu said many Chinese publications were full of gossip and sensational stories advocating money-worship.
He accused regional governments of spending money on "vanity projects" instead of basic cultural facilities.
Mr Cai blamed the changes on China's move to a market economy.
In an interview with state news agency Xinhua, he lashed out at what he called "vulgar productions" that advocated money-worship and consumerism.
"We publish more than 300,000 books every year, but how many of them could be compared with the scriptures inherited from our ancestors?" he asked.
"We produce some 400 movies and hundreds of TV drama programmes each year, but how many of them will be recognised as classics?"
He added: "In today's world, a country's culture and economy are inseparable. A government must pay more attention to culture and originality if it wants to improve the quality of economic development."
Mr Cai said "vulgar publications" were a negative result of China's move to a market economy.
In June, China's media watchdog issued guidelines following concern over racy dating shows on television.
Programme makers have been accused of provoking contestants to spice up the programmes.

Asian Sales Propel Profits for Large Multinational Corporations

As large multinational corporations have reported their second quarter results in recent weeks, a trend is emerging, many are relying on Asia for growth.
Michael Geoghegan, the chief executive officer for the global bank HSBC, moved to Hong Kong from the bank's headquarters in London earlier this year.
In announcing the bank's second quarter earnings of $6.8 billion recently, Geoghegan underscored the importance of that shift.
"Asia remains the bedrock of profitability," he said.
"It is in Asia that we are seeing the greatest opportunity for growth."
HSBC's Hong Kong operations saw profit rise 13 percent, while earnings from the rest of Asia climbed 36 percent.
At Standard Chartered Bank, 73 percent of its $3.12 billion profit in the second quarter came from Asia.
Profit from the Americas, Britain and Europe accounted for only four percent.
The International Monetary Fund forecasts that China's economy will expand by more than 10 percent and India's by over 9 percent this year.
In comparison, the U.S. is only expected to grow at 3.3 percent, and Europe at 1 percent.
With demand in the U.S. and Europe still weak after the global financial crisis, Asia's growing population, rising middle class and strong investment spending offer strong potential growth for multinational companies.

Churchill's dentures fetch nearly $24,000

A partial set of British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill's gold-mounted dentures has fetched 15,200 pounds ($23,770) at an auction, over three times the estimate.
The false teeth, specially designed to disguise Churchill's lisp, were sold by the son of the technician who was commissioned to make them.
They had been expected to make a maximum of 5,000 pounds at Thursday's sale by Keys auctioneer.
"The atmosphere was electric," said a Keys' spokesman.
The buyer, a collector of Churchill memorabilia from Gloucestershire, also owns the microphone with which Churchill announced the end of the war in Europe in 1945.

Officials ordered to quit club following outcry

More than 30 Chinese government officials have been ordered to cancel their membership of a really luxurious golf club in the wealthy eastern city of Wenzhou after a torrent of online criticism.
The Wenzhou Golf Association (WGA) charges 398,000 yuan or $58,583 for membership, about 40 times the average annual income of farmers in Zhejiang province, where Wenzhou is located.
Reports about the WGA provoked a backlash on the internet.
China's ruling Communist Party has repeatedly vowed to stamp out official corruption, a key source of public discontent as the booming economy gives senior officials many opportunities to use their power for private gain.
Some officials claimed they had not been informed they were given membership, which would be equivalent to several years salary.

숯가습기를 만들었다.

원래는 기계가습기를 사용했었는데, 매일 물갈고, 씻고 하다보니, 어느 날 들고 다니다가

떨어뜨려서 깨뜨려버렸다.

(사실, 기계가습기가 관리를 잘 안하거나, 관리를 잘 하더라도 몸에 더 안좋을 수 있다는 소리를 듣고는,

기계가습기를 천연가습기로 바꿀까 말까 고민하다가, 마침 기계가습기가 깨지고 해서,

까마귀 날자 배떨어진다고, 바로 바꿔버렸다.)

숯으로 가습기를 만드는데는, 주로 참숯 백탄을 쓴다고 한다.

그래서, 인터넷에서 찾던 중, 다음 사이트를 알게 되어 참숯 백탄을 주문했다.

기계가습기만큼 많은 수증기를 뿜어내지는 않지만, 큰방의 습도를 거의 일정하게 50%~60% 유지해 주고 있었다.

아침에 큰 방문을 열어놓으면, 조금있다가 45%~50%정도로 떨어지기는 하는데, 그 이후로도 계속 이 정도의 습도를 유지해 주고 있었다.

건조한 실내공기에 많이 민감한 집사람도, 아직까지 숯가습기에 그다지 호의적이지는 않지만,

아직까지 별 말이 없는 걸 보니, 그렇게 나쁜 것 같지는 않다.

Tutoring Students Might Lower Dementia Risk in Older Americans

Retired Americans seeking useful ways to spend their time find that tutoring children not only helps the students, but may also reduce their own risk of developing dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease.
Chaniya Anderson is a second grader at Whittier Elementary School in Washington, D.C.
She is a little behind in math and reading so she gets one-on-one tutoring twice a week from 62-year-old volunteer Shirley Mickel, a retired federal government employment discrimination investigator.
"I really love it. It gives me an opportunity to give back." says Mickel.
"Also, it helps me to stay alert and stay involved with children."
Recent research at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland indicates that the volunteers like Mickel do benefit from their efforts.
Exercising your brain to help problem solving and to help children read may actually be improving the areas of brain such as frontal lobes," says Michelle Carlson, associate director of the Center on Aging and Health at Johns Hopkins.
"And, by improving this parts of brain, we may be reducing the risk of dementia such as Alzheimer's disease the most common form of dementia"
Carson says that older adults are growing in numbers around the world, and there are mutual benefits to pairing them with children who need help.

Russian planemakers eye global markets

Desperate to shed its Soviet Union image as a maker of clunky airliners, Russia is eager to become a significant player in the global civil aviation market.
The nation is pinning its hopes on a new aircraft project and its reputation as a trusted arms exporter.
But first, it will need to win over sceptics in the home market.
Not a single new Russian civil aircraft engineering project has been successfully turned into a mass-produced plane during the past two decades since the USSR ceased to exist.

Manufacturing Cools in US, China; Accelerates in India, Euro-Zone

Global surveys of manufacturers show factory activity has cooled in the United States and China, while growth has accelerated in India and the 16-nation euro-zone.
The U.S. Institute for Supply Management says its manufacturing index fell to 55.5 in July from 56.2 in June.
A reading above 50 means factory output is growing, while a sub-50 reading signals contraction.
It is the 12th consecutive month of growth for U.S. manufacturers, but the pace of that growth has declined for the past three months.
July's reading beat economists' forecasts of a slowdown to 54.1.
Another survey of manufacturing companies in China found that factory production shrank in July for the first time in 16 months.
London-based bank HSBC says India's manufacturing sector performed better in July, with faster growth driven by new orders.
A separate report shows manufacturing growth also accelerated last month in the 16-nation euro-zone, where Germany accounted for most of the increase.
China's government has been trying to cool down industrial production to prevent the economy from overheating.
It has tightened companies' access to credit and imposed limits on property speculation and investment in energy-intensive plants.
China's statistics bureau published its own manufacturing index Sunday, showing a slowdown in growth to 51.2 in July from 52.1 in June.

Greece makes 'strong start' in cutting debt, IMF says

Greece's efforts to tackle its public deficit have had a "strong start", the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Union (EU) have said.
The comments came after a delegation of staff from the IMF, EU and European Central Bank visited the country to check on the progress.
In May, the EU and the IMF agreed to loan Greece 110bn euros ($145bn; £91bn) over three years.
An IMF official said he was "confident" Greece would get the next instalment.
A 9bn-euros loan has get to be given to Greece and is dependent upon the government meeting progress targets.
Greece is continuing efforts to make big cuts to government spending, moves that have sparked a number of violent protests and strikes.
While the IMF and EU welcomed the work Greece had carried out so far, they also warned that "important challenges and risks remain".
They noted while central government spending was now "significantly below budget limits", local authorities and hospitals were still over-spending.
The report added that the Greek government had made "impressive" efforts regarding structural reforms, such as trimming pensions and continuing efforts to reform the labour market.
The Greek government is trying to reduce a national debt that stands at about 115% of its gross domestic output, and a public deficit that exceeds 13%.

Skateboarding priest becomes YouTube hit

A Hungarian Roman Catholic priest has become a YouTube hit with his distinctive method of spreading the word of the Load.
Father Zoltan Lendvai, 45, believes skateboarding can open the way to God for young people.
The video of him in action, Funny Priest Skateboarding, has so far attracted close to 180,000 hits.
Lendvai says he follows the ways of Saint John Bosco, an Italian priest and educator in the 19th century who used games as part of education for youngsters.
"Many times I have felt that this is the way I can bring many people a bit closer to Jesus," he said.
He learned the skills of skateboarding at the age of 14 at school but it was only later, when he served as a priest in northwest Hungary, that he realized the impact his skill could have on young people.

Singapore extends jail term for Swiss graffiti man.

A Singapore court extended a jail term for a Swiss man by two months to seven and maintained an earlier ruling that he receives three strokes of the cane for trespassing and spray-painting graffiti on a train.
The harsher sentence, which reinforced the city-state's low tolerance for even minor crimes, would deter future copycat offenders, Singapore Appeals Court's Judge V.K. Rajah said in the ruling.
"It is behavior which is entirely unacceptable in Singapore, regardless of the artistic merit or lack thereof of the graffiti," the judge said in a written statement.
In June, Oliver Fricker, 32, was sentenced to three strokes of a cane and five months in prison after he pleaded guilty to breaking into a train depot in May and spray-painting the graffiti across two carriages.

Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock was the best-paid actress over the past year, according to Forbes magazine.
The 46-year-old earned $56m (£35m) between June 2009 and June 2010, driven by income from her hit movies The Proposal and The Blind Side.

Two Gulf states to ban some Blackberry functions

Two Gulf states have announced bans on some functions of the Blackberry mobile phone, claiming security concerns.
The United Arab Emirates is to block sending e-mails, accessing the internet, and delivering instant messages to other Blackberry handsets.
Saudi Arabia is to prevent the use of the Blackberry-to-Blackberry instant messaging service.
Both nations are unhappy that they are unable to monitor such communications via the handsets.
This is because the Blackberry handsets automatically send the encrypted data to computer servers outside the two countries.
Abdulrahman Mazi, a board member of state-controlled Saudi Telecom, has admitted that the decision is intended to put pressure on Blackberry's Canadian owner, Research in Motion (RIM), to release data from users' communications "when needed".
The UAE's telecoms regulator, TRA, said the lack of compliance with local laws raised "judicial, social and national security concerns".
There are an estimated 500,000 Blackberry users in the UAE, and 400,000 in Saudi Arabia.
Media freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders told the BBC last week that while the UAE was playing a "technological leadership role in the Arab world", this was backed by "repressive laws" and a "general trend of intensified surveillance".

British Prime Minister in India Seeking Business, Trade Deals

British Prime Minister David Cameron chose the information technology hub of Bangalore to start a visit which he hopes "drives our economic growth upwards and our unemployment figures downwards."
The British leader made it clear that enhanced economic links with India topped his agenda.
While India's economy has shrugged off the global financial crisis and returned to high levels of growth, Britain is struggling to cope with the aftermath of the global recession.
And there are fears that plans to cut public spending could increase unemployment.
Prime Minister Cameron said he believes boosting trade with India could help create more jobs in his country.
"This is a trade mission, but I prefer to see it as a jobs mission. Indian companies employ 90,000 people in the UK. Many more jobs in Britain exist thanks to the activities of British companies in India," Cameron said.
"Now I want to see thousands more jobs created in Britain, and of course in India through trade in the months and years ahead. That is the core purpose of my visit."
Cameron called on India to lower trade barriers and allow easier access to British businesses, especially in areas such as banking, insurance and defense manufacturing.
The large delegation accompanying Prime Minister Cameron includes six ministers and dozens of senior executives of large British companies.
